Lawyers funded by the Justice Centre have sent a warning letter to @AndreaHorwath and @HamiltonPolice after they attempted to prevent a political conference organized by @DominionSoc from taking place in Hamilton. Mayor Horwath urged local businesses not to host the conference. Hamilton Police then asked the public to report possible venues to police, despite identifying no crime. Constitutional lawyer Hatim Kheir said, “The City of Hamilton and Hamilton Police are using both direct action and their influence to exclude a viewpoint they disagree with from the entire city. This is unconstitutional and fundamentally at odds with the way a free and democratic society operates.” The legal warning letter calls on Hamilton officials to cease and retract their actions and respect Charter freedoms of expression and peaceful assembly. 🇨🇦 Read the full story here: jccf.ca/legal-warning-issued… @DanielTyrie

Rafael Bardajl has a brilliant essay today in @spectator about the consequences for Euope of the #Ceuta invasion by Morocco. The relevant passage for Canada is the following: “A civilisation can be multiracial. History offers countless examples of societies composed of people of different ethnic origins who nevertheless shared a common language, civic culture, historical memory and political identity. “What no civilisation has sustained for long is multiculturalism understood not as diversity within a shared public culture, but as the permanent coexistence of parallel communities with no common civic identity. A democracy requires disagreement. A civilisation requires cohesion. “Without a common civic culture, solidarity gradually weakens, democratic trust erodes and political institutions lose the shared assumptions upon which they depend. This is not an argument against immigration. Nor is it an argument for ethnic homogeneity. It is an argument for cultural integration as the indispensable condition of democratic continuity.” Integration as the condition of successful multiculturalism? Heresy! I can hear the howls of outrage already! @MLInstitute , @davidbclinton @maxmako2015 @CopelanPeter @Pagmenzies Paywalled link in comments.

Someone approached me last week and said that I spend too much time talking about problems, and not enough about solutions. So here are the solutions. You may notice they’re extremely simple, because our problem has never been a lack of fixes, it’s people who refuse to see them.

“The fact that so many normal Canadians are, in fact, deeply supportive of their Jewish neighbours says a lot about their ability to block out official messaging. And the fact that the preferences of so much of the educational and broadcast establishment are flat-out ignored by regular Canadians is downright encouraging.”
Official government responses to antisemitism in Canada miss the point: most of the problem can be traced to ideological indoctrination in publicly funded schools, universities, and media programming. Simple solution? Stop funding our enemies. theaudit.ca/p/antisemitism-c…

Toronto's housing situation is a calamity. Which makes this relevant: 1. Despite a $120,000 family income, @oliviachow lived in the publicly-subsidized Hazelburn co-op in Toronto and paid $800 a month for a three bedroom + den unit. 2. According to the co-op, she should have been paying hundreds more. 3. Thousands of people were on the waiting lists for the kinds of units Chow occupied. She moved out shortly after getting caught by the media. 4. All of that is verifiably true. And it is considered so damaging, Chow's campaign has done secret focus group research on what to say about it. 5. That's who Chow is. #topoli

Oxford University researchers have discovered the densest element yet known to science... The new element, Governmentium (symbol=Gv), has one neutron, 25 assistant neutrons, 88 deputy neutrons and 198 assistant deputy neutrons, giving it an atomic mass of 312. These 312 particles are held together by forces called morons, which are surrounded by vast quantities of lepton-like particles called pillocks. Since Governmentium has no electrons, it is inert. However, it can be detected because it impedes every reaction with which it comes into contact. A tiny amount of Governmentium can cause a reaction that would normally take less than a second, to take from 4 days to 4 years to complete. Governmentium has a normal half-life of 2 to 6 years. It does not decay, but instead undergoes a reorganisation in which a portion of the assistant neutrons and deputy neutrons exchange places. In fact, Governmentium's mass will actually increase over time, since each reorganisation will cause more morons to become neutrons, forming isodopes. This characteristic of moron promotion leads some scientists to believe that Governmentium is formed whenever morons reach a critical concentration. This hypothetical quantity is referred to as a critical morass. When catalysed with money, Governmentium becomes Administratium (symbol=Ad), an element that radiates just as much energy as Governmentium, since it has half as many pillocks but twice as many morons.

A nationalized, public AI? Nathan Sanders and Bruce Schneier are calling for it in the Globe and Mail: theglobeandmail.com/business… They rightly point out that (1) the Canadian economy should develop robust AI and cloud computing capacity free from US control and that (2) domestic and foreign corporations may not have public interest in mind when designing and delivering AI. But a nationalized AI is not the answer. It's not clear that an Ottawa-controlled AI could keep pace with private innovation while stewarding your tax dollars. (Canadians remember ArriveCAN.) Neither is it clear that government will safeguard the public interest. (Canadians remember the RCMP's secret use of Clearview AI facial recognition technology.) Improperly designed AI will undermine Canadians' privacy, freedom of expression, autonomy, and equality. A nationalized AI will simply deliver to Ottawa expanded control over an internet it is all too eager to regulate (e.g., Bills C-2, C-8, C-11, C-18, and C-63). Sanders and Schneier write, "...public AI developed by transparent, accountable agencies would allow democratic processes and political oversight to govern how these powerful systems function." Where are those "transparent, accountable agencies"?

Iran just ran the most sophisticated electronic warfare campaign ever deployed against a commercial satellite constellation. They succeeded. And it didn't matter. Here's the physics they missed: The regime spent $300 million on Russian Krasukha-4 jammers. Achieved 30-80% packet loss nationwide. Made video calls impossible. Made streaming unwatchable. Made commercial internet useless. On January 8, Crown Prince Pahlavi said: "8 PM tonight. Chant together. Wherever you are." At 8 PM, neighborhoods across Tehran erupted simultaneously. 31 provinces. 185 cities. The most coordinated uprising in 45 years. The generals optimized for the wrong variable. Netflix requires 5-25 megabits per second of continuous throughput. Revolution requires 1.3 kilobits. Once. A single protest instruction compresses to less storage than one pixel of video. It doesn't need real-time delivery. It can queue, retry, relay through whatever windows the jamming leaves open. TCP/IP guarantees eventual delivery. At 80% packet loss, messages take 5 attempts instead of 1. The message still arrives. Iran built a $300 million system to deny Netflix. They couldn't deny revolution. This is the hard floor of the digital age: the bandwidth required for coordination is 10,000x smaller than the bandwidth required for commerce. Autocracy has a throughput problem that physics cannot solve. The night they tried to kill the sky, they discovered the sky had already won.
