Tundu Lissu was today sentenced to four years in prison by the Tanzania High Court.
In April 2025, Lissu campaigned for electoral reforms under the slogan, “No Reforms, No Election,” as Chadema’s presidential candidate against Samia Suluhu. Instead of implementing those reforms, Suluhu chose a different route: Lissu was arrested and charged with treason, while his party was promptly disqualified by the Electoral Commission. Suluhu won the election with 98%😳
After spending 19 months in prison, he was finally acquitted of treason today ,but he was not freed, a fresh charge of “inciting unrest” was slapped on him and he was immediately convicted and sentenced to four years in prison.
From the weaponized treason trials used against Dr. @kizzabesigye1 in Uganda and Victoire Ingabire in Rwanda, Lissu’s sentence is a chilling reminder that in this region, demanding democracy is treated as a crime.

This is Tadeo Balimunsi who was wrongly imprisoned for 11 years. He spent all those years on remand before the case against was dismissed recently. He is so depressed he says, in the many phone calls he has made to me, that he thinks it’s better to die or go back to prison. He doesn’t know where to start from. The state that kept him in jail for over a decade isn’t at least taking responsibility to compensate him so that he has what to start from? He asks for your help🙏🏽

Today marks 200 days since the abduction of our brother Christopher Gody aka King Zale on 21st April. Zale was picked up by armed men from Kamwokya in the presence of different people. Those who were detained with him and have been lucky to return from the torture chambers have confirmed that he was there with them. A Habeas Corpus order was issued by the High Court but it was ignored! His mother, wife and children are living under extreme distress - wondering what became of their person. Mulimba mutufuze bubi nnyo!

Exactly 198 days into his abduction, comrade Christopher Goddy aka King Zale, a local musician has neither been produced in court nor released by his captors. He is one of the many comrades that were spotted in the recent videos released by the now exiled UPDF officer Lt. Herbert Matanda Mabonga. The regime remains silent on these atrocities with no signs of holding its actors accountable. We demand for the release of comrade King Zale, Sam Mugumya and all the missing persons being illegally held at the basement facility/ ‘safe house’

Actually a number of people within the system see and are embarrassed by the increasing use of brute violence and other crude methods. It’s only a few like OO in this article that can once in a while come out to speak. Many are scared of the rising unsophisticated militant force that can only respond to critical engagement with violence (the only means they have)
