UHURU SICKLE CELL RUN 2026 | A MOVEMENT FOR LIFE. A COMMITMENT TO HOPE.
What a day. What an incredible demonstration of community, solidarity and service to humanity.
Yesterday, hundreds of people gathered in Lira City for the 3rd Edition of the Annual Uhuru Sickle Cell Run, united by one powerful purpose: to raise awareness about sickle cell disease, promote early diagnosis, strengthen access to quality care and support families affected by SCD across the Lango Sub-region.
They came.
They ran.
They walked.
They stood together.
And most importantly, they chose to be part of the solution.
We are immensely proud and grateful to have successfully delivered the 2026 Uhuru Sickle Cell Run. The energy, generosity and solidarity demonstrated today reminded us of the power of communities coming together for a cause that touches thousands of lives.
Our sincere appreciation goes to our sponsors @BOU_Official @kcbbankug @UNOC_UG @Microhaem @MinofHealthUG @mbnlabs , @bayloruganda , @NicosamHealth, @HemexHealth @UNOC_UG @MinofHealthUG, partners, health professionals, security teams, media partners, volunteers, community leaders and everyone who contributed to making this remarkable day possible.
Your support strengthens the mission of the Catherine Phil Sickle Cell Support Initiative (CAPSCI).
Together, we can advance awareness, early diagnosis, quality care and hope for people living with sickle cell disease.

Access to life-saving medical treatment while in custody is not a privilege; it is a fundamental humanitarian imperative.
We respectfully appeal to the Authorities of Grayson County to ensure that Sarafina Bukirwa, a courageous Sickle Cell Warrior, is granted uninterrupted and timely access to her prescribed medication and essential medical care while in custody.
For individuals living with sickle cell disease, continuity of treatment is critical to preventing avoidable complications, debilitating pain crises, and potentially life-threatening medical emergencies. We therefore urge the relevant authorities to treat this matter with the utmost urgency, compassion, and due regard for her dignity, wellbeing, and right to appropriate healthcare.

EIGHT YEARS ON — PHILIP “PHIL,” FOREVER IN OUR HEARTS
Today, Catherine Phil Sickle Cell Support Initiative (CAPSCI) pauses in solemn remembrance and profound gratitude as we mark eight years since the passing of Philip “Phil”, a remarkable sickle cell warrior whose life, though tender in years, left an indelible imprint on everyone privileged to know him.
Phil was far more than a young man living with sickle cell disease. He was a beacon of resilience, compassion, and possibility. His extraordinary love for humanity, music, technology, and the advancement of society inspired both children and adults around him. In the face of challenges that could have diminished his spirit, Phil continued to radiate warmth, creativity, hope, and an unmistakable zest for life.
Eight years may have passed, but his memory has never faded.
As a lasting gesture of love and remembrance, his cherished name, “Phil,” forms part of the legally registered name of the Catherine Phil Sickle Cell Support Initiative. Every time we speak the name of our organisation, every family we reach, every child we screen, every person we educate, every life we advocate for and every barrier we strive to dismantle, Phil’s legacy lives and breathes through our work.
His story reminds us that a life is not measured merely by the number of years lived, but by the depth of love given, the lives touched, and the difference left behind.
Today, we do not remember Phil only with tears. We remember him with gratitude, hope, and purpose. We celebrate the beautiful life he lived, the people he inspired and the enduring legacy that continues to propel our mission to build a future where sickle cell disease no longer limits the dreams, dignity or opportunities of those living with it.
Phil, eight years later, you remain woven into every fiber of our work. Your name lives in our institution. Your memory lives in our hearts. Your legacy lives in every life we touch.
Until we meet again, may your beautiful soul continue to rest in eternal peace.
Forever remembered.
Forever cherished.
Forever our inspiration.
Forever Phil. ❤️

Leadership in Action | Advancing the Sickle Cell Agenda in Uganda
This afternoon, our Executive Director, Mr. Daniel Roy Odur, featured on NBS Television’s Live at 1, where he provided an insightful perspective on Uganda’s evolving response to Sickle Cell Disease (SCD).
The engagement highlighted the significant strides made in strengthening SCD awareness, early diagnosis, access to care, advocacy, and health-system responsiveness, while candidly examining the persistent structural and systemic challenges that continue to impede equitable access to life-saving services.
As an organization, we remain resolute in advancing evidence-informed interventions, strengthening community engagement, and catalysing strategic partnerships that place the dignity, wellbeing, and survival of people living with Sickle Cell Disease at the centre of Uganda’s public-health agenda.
The progress is encouraging. The challenges remain formidable. The commitment is unwavering.
