I’m going to fight against both sides here, and say there’s truth to both.
1) Laine, unlike Toews at the time, still has team helping value. Toews statistically looked like a poor bet for a bottom 6 piece and the Jets thought of him as a 2C candidate. Laine has mid6 impact.
I’ll say it: Patrik Laine would likely come with a similar trajectory of results as a Toews signing did
It’d likely elicit a similar reaction from a different segment of the fan base as Toews one did
Results wise, it likely falters.
Better avenues to go if you’re serious about winning, imho
But if winning isn’t the priority, and yall know by now it wouldn’t be mine, I’d be fine with it

The decentralized draft is a self-inflicted disaster for the NHL. The Draft used to be a unique event with a mystical atmosphere bringing together the entire hockey world to one place for a special weekend. Almost everyone I speak to hopes it goes back to an in person draft.
