An announcement that is as personal as professional:
18 months ago, we started collecting online prices in real time to track how Liberation Day tariffs were feeding into inflation.
A lot has happened since. The BLS commissioner was fired. The longest government shutdown in US history meant CPI wasn’t published for the first time. And the case for an independent measure of inflation became much stronger.
What started as a tariff inflation tracker has since grown into something much bigger:
The Bloomberg Price Project (BPP), our attempt to build the US CPI from the ground up using alternative data.
Today, BPP covers 87% of the CPI basket, across both goods and services (more new data will be added in coming weeks). Every month, we collect millions of prices from card transactions, e-commerce sites, grocery stores, pharmacies, rental listings, corporate data, Bloomberg Terminal market prices and government records. And more data are coming.
The payoff is detail. Official CPI data let you drill down to categories such as “uncooked beef steaks.” BPP goes much deeper — breaking the CPI basket into almost 700 line items, compared with roughly 200 in the official data.
Brought to you by: myself, Troy Durie, Daniel Ripperger-Suhler, Joshua Danial and Scott Johnson from across Bloomberg Economics.
Explore the Bloomberg Price Project at BECO MODELS BPP <GO>, or download the data at ECAN US BPI <GO>.
I believe the paywall on Bloomberg.com is coming down briefly so you can read this without a subscription (but you should subscribe!)

New in @semafor: Scott Bessent called Bloomberg’s EIC last year threatening the news org if it published a critical story. He hasn’t appeared on Bloomberg TV since the piece ran.

Four journalists from The Times rigorously reported this story, including interviewing 10 people sent from the United States to Africa and obtaining corroborating information about their experiences. The Times sought comment from across the administration, including the Department of Homeland Security, about the claims of these deportees. This reporting presents a fair, thorough and above all accurate portrayal of the testimonies of those deported to Liberia and Equatorial Guinea.
Another day and another hoax about ICE detention from the @nytimes. The media is clearly desperate for these false allegations to be true.
NO ONE is being tortured, denied medical care, or beaten in ICE detention facilities.
Make no mistake: this type of GARBAGE being peddled by the media is fueling the more than 1,300% increase in assaults against our officers, who put their lives on the line every day to arrest violent criminal illegal aliens and protect the lives of American citizens.
Trade talks between the US and Canada came to a halt over the weekend with new US tariffs going into effect. Now Canada has responded with counter-tariffs. @Mathieu_Dion explains what this all means bloom.bg/4xZEBdw bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

An important point. I estimate the trade-weighted average tariff (both new and increased rates) equals approximately 30%, rather than 50%, on the affected trade flows. A large package here, to be sure, but not quite full dollar-for-dollar as we normally mean it.

New: Canada's ambassador to the US, @MarkDWiseman, tells me that trade talks didn't collapse over any one issue, but over several where the written text surprised the Canadians and wasn't what they thought they agreed to. 🧵

The latest: U.S.-Canada trade talks are going to the wire but sounding positive. Sources say things are headed towards a deal, and Trump struck an upbeat tone.
Topline: U.S. applies 15% auto tariff (25 now), 25% steel and aluminum tariffs, each to a certain quota (50% now). Pauses the 10% softwood lumber 232. Canada is, among other things, backing away from a booze boycott.
Talks are ongoing and last minute issues include fine print such as the definition of US content in automobiles, per sources.

"Balsillie said Canada opened the door to US meddling in domestic policy in 2018 when it signed the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement, which included digital trade rules that mandated cross-border data flows and restricted data localization, or requiring firms to store data locally."

Mark Carney is doing what no previous Canadian leader has done by accepting that President Donald Trump can impose tariffs despite the terms of the North American trade pact, the country’s former deputy prime minister said. bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

New: The US auto tariff on Canada is set to drop to 15% (from 25% now) under the deal, per sources.
It will still apply to non-US content only, per sources, so the effective rate would be roughly half that.
Japan and Korea pay 15% now, but with less USMCA compliance red tape.
Derek DeCloet retweeted
New: The Trump administration is privately downplaying the odds of a deal today with Canada to avert new tariffs due to kick in tonight, casting it as a coin flip or worse, per sources.
Trump and Carney are still due to speak today.

The US and Canada remain in talks on a potential interim deal to stave off new tariffs next week. The latest meetings have made progress and suffered setbacks; Trump hasn't been briefed, I'm told. He remains committed to using tariffs to reshore manufacturing, per a US official.
Mark Carney wants a broader trade deal with the US, but Canadian officials warned counterparts he’d face pressure to retaliate if Donald Trump moves ahead with his 50% tariff threat. Read more in the Canada Daily. bloomberg.com/news/newslette…
