All of us are drug users. The extent to which your drug use is criminalized is largely a matter of privilege and access.

.@CMBrookePinto does peace and tranquility only apply to the wealthy in Kalorama? Over 21K of emails have been sent calling for accountability in the killing of #JustinRobinson—still no response from you.
Here in the nation's capital we champion our First Amendment rights to protest, assemble, and have our voices heard.   Government also has a great responsibility to protect the well-being of District residents in their homes and their rights to tranquility and privacy.   Today, the Council passed my emergency bill to provide reasonable limitations around the use of sound amplification devices in residential communities and protect the tranquility of residents in their homes and neighborhoods.    I will be working with my colleagues on permanent changes to our noise ordinances. As of today, our emergency bill: 1. prohibits amplification devices when targeting a residence for a demonstration in a residential zone between 7 p.m. and 9 a.m. 2. prohibits throwing projectiles at residential properties when intended to cause fear, intimidate, or retaliate against residents

No one should go to jail for using any drug. Cannabis exceptionalism doesn’t make us safer so long as law enforcement agencies are empowered to arrest people for what they put in their bodies - and in DC, Black residents comprise 45% of the population but 85%> of drug arrests.
No one should go to jail for smoking weed.

It’s a trick question because they’re very well-aware. Save a few Councilmembers, though, the reality is that they don’t care.
How many encampment evictions will it take for DC's government to realize they are directly contributing to the homelessness crisis?

“The point of the crime bill is to make life unsustainable for people who use drugs or people who are homeless or living in precarious situations. Any time drug-free zones pop up, services are interrupted,” said @albradley416 of @HIPSDC. streetsensemedia.org/article…

TODAY DC council is trying to wreck ERAP. Read our letter to @BrianneKNadeau @CM_McDuffie @AnitaBondsDC @CMRobertWhiteDC @CMCHenderson w/ allied tenant orgs at Tivoli Gardens, Pershing House & Oaklawn, in addition to @dcw1mutualaid. Together we represent 4000+ Ward 1 tenants.

The Mayor: - cuts ERAP every year - does not fund vouchers that she says tenants should be getting instead of ERAP - claims there is fraud with 0 cases proven - delays ERAP payments to landlords for mos But her primary motivation is better serving low-income tenants?
The Emergency Rental Assistance Program is no longer reliably helping people who are in true need—low-income residents facing emergencies. Keeping COVID-era policies in place has created an unsustainable, ineffective program that unfortunately protects people who repeatedly fail to pay their rent.

The Mayor cannot produce a single case where a renter has lied about where their "true need" for ERAP. Instead, she's pushing a bill that will mean more evictions, more displacement & gentrification, and more homelessness, while doing nothing to ensure that residents stay housed.

“Not sure how that tracks—the fact that 112,470 people died from April 2022 to April 2023 doesn’t mean 11,304 people have been saved. It means an additional 101,168 people have since died.” thank you @Filtermag_org & specifically @kastaliamedrano for this honest framing 🔥 -
"The thing to remember about media coverage of overdose death data is that almost all of it's just unrelated sentences strung together by reporters who are reciting information—much of it wrong—without any idea of what it means." By @kastaliamedrano: filtermag.org/overdose-death…

Yet not a single word about Justin Robinson. Not a single piece of legislation you’ve just released even acknowledging criminal convictions of 3 MPD officers in the last month that also saw the cold-blooded execution of another Black man unconscious in his car. #JusticeforJustin
Our police officers put their lives on the line everyday for our communities and today we remember and honor the life of Investigator Wayne David. He is a true hero and we will not forget his dedication and service to the District.

JAMA study refutes the narrative that Oregon decrim contributed to a rise in overdose deaths. Confounding variable was rising fentanyl prevalence in the supply. "If we adjust for that, the effect of Measure 110 shrinks to zero.” @maddidellplain reports: filtermag.org/oregon-decrimi…

New report from @ACLU_DC reveals ongoing racial disparities in MPD's #StopAndFrisk practices. Black residents make up 72% of those stopped, despite being less than half of DC's population. It’s time for real accountability and justice. Read more: bit.ly/3BfMd3v

Council added vouchers to the budget bc the mayor blocked all other ways to help #RRH families. We worked w/the agencies to ensure funding matched planned spending. This last-min pushback will leave families homeless & cost taxpayers. The mayor should offer solutions, not hurdles
An update here: @ChmnMendelson says at his media briefing DHS has told him that the Council "goofed" in trying to fund new vouchers to help these families and that some might not be available after all. He called this "mystifying," and I share his confusion...

Over 900 DC families are being forced out of #RapidRehousing just three weeks before long-term vouchers become available, putting many at risk of being evicted.   I join my Council colleagues and others calling to #KeepFamiliesHoused and extend bridge funding until October 1st.
🧵I worked hard to identify & fund #HousingVouchers in the budget so families leaving #RapidRehousing wouldn't be pushed into #Homelessness. It's illogical & inhumane to evict families, spending 2x more making them homeless, rather than continuing housing support a little longer.

Massachusetts has the lowest incarceration rate in the U.S., but the U.S. puts so many people in cages that Massachusetts is 20% higher incarceration rate than Saudi Arabia, 50% higher than China, 100% higher than France, and 700% higher than Japan.
