Director of African CDC calling the International community to pay attention and respond to the growing outbreak of Ebola- now in Nigeria -
EBOLA IN NIGERIA: AN URGENT CALL FOR GLOBAL SOLIDARITY Today 20 October 2026, I spoke with the Nigerian Coordinating Minister of Health and Social welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, who informed me of a confirmed Ebola Bundibugyo case in Nigeria. I commend his transparency and leadership. Early reporting saves lives. When Africa CDC declared this Ebola outbreak on 15 May 2026, we warned of its regional dimension and implications. This Ebola Bundibugyo outbreak has already become the most geographically widespread Ebola outbreak in history, affecting multiple countries across three regions of Africa. With mortality approaching 50% in DRC, we face an extremely serious threat. Africa CDC has already begun mobilising support for Nigeria, while intensifying our response in DRC and Kenya and maintaining heightened vigilance in Uganda. My appeal to the international community is urgent: ACT NOW. We need immediate, flexible financing, medical supplies, diagnostics, trained responders and stronger community-based surveillance. We cannot allow this outbreak to spread to more countries or continue for another year. Every day of delay costs lives. Africa’s health security is global health security. Stopping Ebola in Africa today means protecting the world. Nigeria has our full solidarity. Together, we must defeat this outbreak. @AfricaCDC, @WHO, @WHOAFRO, @WorldBank, @gavi, @CEPIvaccines, @UNICEF, @NCDCgov, @African Union Commission, @Pandemic_Fund, @European Commission, @EU HERA, @US CDC, @UK FCDO, @Public Health Agency of Canada, @African Development Bank, @AfreximBank, @Gates Foundation, @Mastercard Foundation, @Wellcome, @UNOCHA, @IFRC #AfricaReady #StopEbola #HealthSecurity

Looking forward to giving a Public Health Scotland learning event this week about healthy life expectancy, what we know about living longer & healthier lives and the role of policy and experts in this objective. It’s a nice chance for me to learn from colleagues and a good complement to the MPH & undergrad teaching. The undergrad students requested a COVID lecture this week despite my attempts to dissuade - they were 12-16 years old during the pandemic, which arguably was the group hit overall hardest by the impact.

U.S. suddenly realising that maybe the British got something right with the NHS 78 years ago….
Two-thirds of Americans now say they favor Medicare for All, according to a new @KFF poll. That's the highest level KFF has recorded since it started polling the idea in 2016, up from 53 percent in 2020. This tells me two things: Americans are fed up with rising health care costs, and no one is offering up a more realistic, more effective alternative. You can't beat something with nothing, and right now Medicare for All is close to the only something on the table. Health policy experts need to offer something else. What are your best ideas? (Mine are coming)

Inflation is up again. Not because of a pandemic. Not because of a natural disaster. Because of Trump’s war, tariffs, and corporate tax breaks. It really is this simple: Republicans took over, and then drove up the cost of living in America.
BREAKING: Inflation climbed to a 4-month high in September as the Iran war continued to drive up gasoline prices ahead of key midterm elections. Prices rose 3.7% in September compared to a year earlier. Read more: abcnews.link/Le5jZ0N

4th lecture this week: best part is making jokes which the over 35s laugh at and the younger students just look at me like 😑 (so cringe)

Week 1 at Edinburgh Uni- this week’s masters & undergrad lectures all about: why study public health, what’s it all about, the historical origins of the field, the major causes of disability & death & how we collectively respond to these issues (governance & financing).

Non-fiction is tough. People aren’t reading as much & when they do, it’s often fiction they want. I’m the same- finding it hard to find time to read. Given this, happy that my book is finally coming to the 🇺🇸 in @Target. Pre-order at link 👇 target.com/p/how-not-to-die-…
