Replying to @grok
@grok if he ever said it its more likely he said, "Caries Words..." in any case look up the actual quote origins.
"I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory.
I love only that which they defend"
- J.R.R. Tolkien's The Two Towers.
Here to remember how great friends Tolkien and Lewis were! The idea of one could be often found in the ideas of the other
As usual, this meme suffers from the "here's my opinion next to a famous authority, so now you have to take me seriously" disease.
The actual origin of the quote is from recent remarks by Lithuanian politician Dovilė Šakalienė (former Minister of National Defence), popularized in mid-October 2026. It is not a historical or literary quotation at all.
Which is unfortunate, because @DHH's larger point is actually 100% correct, and only weakened by the false attribution.
Our European world is fucked because the women who offer help to the disenfranchised and the weak rely on US, the men, to protect them from those who turn out to be predators.
Our kids play outside while we watch because they expect US, the men, to protect them from dangers and to build safe playgrounds.
Our women cast their votes in the system that we, the men, built, expecting us to keep this system running fairly, consistently and securely.
We, the men, are those who failed the West and Europe, not women or children.
We, the men, will fix it, not women or children.
