WOW!! More insanity to add to the state of the climate system right now, along with off-the-charts global SSTs, El Niño 3.4 SSTs, and global atmospheric water vapor content. Buckle up, folks — it’s going to be a wild ride this winter!
Maybe the word "unprecedented" is overused in weather/climate but the forecast of the strong weakening of the #PolarVortex in early November is truly without precedent. My stratospheric AO forecast disappeared at -4 SD! Good timing for a PV blog tomorrow! published.aer.com/aoblog/aob…

When the @SolarNationUK was approached to help with this installation, we thought there was non better than our Off Grid specialists @solarsimon to be flown off to the worlds most remote house and give it some #solarlove @BBCSouthNews
A remote hunting lodge on a volcanic outcrop off Iceland's south coast, dubbed the 'loneliest house in the world' on social media, has been fitted with its first solar-charged battery power, reducing its reliance on propane and petrol generators

I’ve been tirelessly posting about H5N1 since the first case was reported in an American human in 2022, in an incarcerated individual forced to cull infected flocks. I watched as the UK reported asymptomatic human cases then shut down the program testing for them. I’ve watched as six Missouri healthcare workers develop H5N1 symptoms after contact with an H5N1 patient. I’ve watched as American CHILDREN tested positive with no known source. I’ve made huge threads about all the mammals & marine mammals H5N1 has blown through as governments & the public ignored it. When it found its way into mice & rats in 2024, experts said the situation was “out of control.” That was almost 3 years ago. The U.S. reported 70 human cases & 1 death by January 2025, & then nothing until now. It will consume us, & our wounds are self-inflicted. I’m sorry.
There is something really concerning (and disappointing) going on in the US right now. A dangerous and preventable situation. Let me explain. nextstrain.org/avian-flu/h5n… 1/

Do I have this right? In the lead up to October 7th: - The Israeli government funds Hamas to the tune of billions of dollars. - The Israeli government ignores warnings from IDF spotters up to 2 years in advance of Oct 7. - The Israeli government ignores the entire Jericho Wall blueprint for the Al Aqsa Flood operation they acquired at least a year in advance. - The Israeli government ignores Qatar’s warning of the impending attack by Hamas. - The Israeli government ignores Egypt’s warning of the impending attack by Hamas. - The Israeli government ignores the US intelligence warning of the impending attack by Hamas. - The Israeli government ignores the public postings showing Hamas training for the attack. - The Israeli government moves the IDF away from the Gaza wall in the days leading up to Oct 7. - Once the attack begins, the Israeli government does not send the military in for several hours despite the IDF having military bases nearby and being “one of the most advanced militaries in the world.” - Once they send the IDF in, the Israeli government orders the military to kill everyone including innocent Israelis (a mass Hannibal Directive). Of the roughly 1,200 Israelis killed, most were likely killed by Israel. - When Hamas offers to free all civilian hostages on the first day following the attack with nothing in return, the Israeli government refuses to accept the hostages.

“America made the first electronic computer to win a war. “ You’re referring to the ENIAC, I presume. Respectfully, it wasn’t made to “win a war” but rather it was first created to produce ballistic tables for artillery, and even then it wasn’t fully operational until after war. There is of course the Attenasoft-Berry computer the preceeded and marginally influenced the design of the ENIAC, but that was really more of a graduate student project then a fully functional computer. If you want to name a computer designed “win a war” my vote would be the Colossus, inspired by Turing, built by Tommy Flowers, and operational at @bletchleypark in the United Kingdom. It was used to decode encrypted communication among the German High command, and it quite literally changed the course of the war, perhaps shortening it by two years.
BlueChip. Built in America. America made the first electronic computer to win a war. Now we depend on our greatest adversaries to build the computers that run our economy and defend our nation. Today, we bring it home.

I don’t think you understand how important Lula’s victory was for the future of the entire world. Trump and Bolsonaro Jr. want to exploit the Brazilian Amazon for oil drilling, mining, and deforestation to expand cattle ranching. The Amazon is vital to our planet’s climate: Lula’s defeat would have accelerated climate catastrophe.

"I expected arguments about economics. What I didn't expect was how enthusiastically some people recommended homelessness. Sleep in your car. Get a gym membership... These weren't hypothetical responses. People actually suggested these things... What kind of fucking worldview produces that reaction?"
After reading the replies to my original post, I've learned that some libertarians have a much bigger problem than their understanding of economics. Their complete lack of empathy is fucking astonishing. I suggested that paying half your income in rent because the alternative is sleeping in a freezing car isn't exactly a wonderful example of economic freedom. The responses were an extraordinary collection of lectures about voluntary exchange, personal responsibility, property rights, and why homelessness is apparently just another consumer preference. Here are the five most common arguments. 1. It's voluntary because nobody is forcing you. Apparently, choosing between unaffordable rent and sleeping in your car is the expression of liberty. Sure, nobody is holding a gun to your head. But someone with $500 in the bank doesn't have the same bargaining power as someone with $10 million in property. A decision made under financial desperation is still a decision. That doesn't mean the person has meaningful economic freedom. If your definition of liberty includes celebrating someone's choice to freeze in their car, perhaps your philosophy needs some fucking work. 2. Just move, get roommates, buy a house, or sleep in your car. This was my favorite. One person suggested getting a gym membership so you could sleep in your car and still shower. Others recommended second jobs, roommates, or simply buying a house. Fucking brilliant. But what happens when millions of households simultaneously move somewhere cheaper? Demand increases, and those locations become less affordable unless housing supply expands. What works for one individual doesn't necessarily work for everyone. It's called the fallacy of composition. An entire housing crisis cannot be solved by giving millions of people individual financial advice. Yet apparently, sleeping in a Toyota Corolla now constitutes a comprehensive economic policy. 3. Government regulations and central banks caused expensive housing. This was actually a reasonable argument, at least initially. Restrictive zoning and excessive development regulations absolutely can contribute to expensive housing. But blaming government for every undesirable market outcome is just ideological laziness. Housing prices also depend on incomes, credit conditions, construction costs, land values, population growth, speculation, and investment expectations. Developers build when they expect sufficient profits, not simply because people need somewhere to live. Removing bad regulations can improve housing supply. It doesn't magically eliminate every other economic problem. An economy is an interconnected system, not a fucking supply-and-demand diagram. 4. The landlord provides a mutually beneficial service. Several people argued that rental transactions must benefit both parties because otherwise they wouldn't happen. Yes, someone facing homelessness might prefer paying half their income in rent to sleeping outside. Congratulations. You've established that people prefer shelter to freezing. But that doesn't prove the housing market is competitive, affordable, or producing desirable outcomes. People routinely accept terrible arrangements because their alternatives are worse. Individual rationality doesn't guarantee desirable outcomes for society. The existence of a transaction isn't proof that the economic system is working particularly well. 5. You aren't entitled to someone else's property or labor. And naturally, someone had to start screaming about communism. Apparently, suggesting that people shouldn't have to sleep in freezing cars is now revolutionary Marxism. I support private property, competitive markets, and private enterprise. But supporting capitalism doesn't require celebrating every outcome it produces. Property rights don't automatically guarantee affordable housing, economic efficiency, or an equitable distribution of resources. You can defend private property without treating human suffering as an acceptable demonstration of economic liberty. Now, here's what genuinely disturbed me. I expected arguments about economics. What I didn't expect was how enthusiastically some people recommended homelessness. Sleep in your car. Get a gym membership. Work three jobs. Move away. Stop complaining. These weren't hypothetical responses. People actually suggested these things. Imagine seeing someone struggling to afford shelter and immediately explaining why they should be grateful to their landlord. What kind of fucking worldview produces that reaction? Markets are supposed to serve human beings. Human beings aren't supposed to suffer simply to validate someone's economic philosophy. I'm a supporter of free markets, but I don't believe that requires abandoning basic human empathy. The irony is that people who constantly preach individual liberty seem perfectly comfortable dismissing the economic circumstances that restrict it. If your response to someone facing homelessness is to congratulate them on having the freedom to sleep in their fucking car, perhaps you've spent too much time defending capitalism and not enough time interacting with actual human beings.

No, the Dahiye Doctrine he coauthored is much more than this: it represents an outright war crime. It also regards civilians in “supportive areas” as legitimate targets. It’s not just about blowing up buildings; it’s focused on eliminating people, non combatants, as well.
Gadi Eisenkot is the father of the so-called Dahyeh Doctrine used against southern suburbs of Beirut in '06: disproportionate retaliation and destruction of civilian infrastructure to establish deterrence. Then used in Gaza.
