ALT This essay contest invites young researchers to reflect on how history is currently interpreted in Europe and Canada focusing in particular on the memory of the continent's totalitarian past, the recollection of the World Wars, Fascism, the Holocaust, Colonialism, and the legacy of Communism and the Cold War Divide. Populist-nationalist forces across Europe have increasingly challenged a transnational memory culture as the foundation for the process of European integration and the formation of a European identity. At the same time, many European societies confront the legacy of their colonial regimes, as Canadian society tackles the historic injustices endured by generations of its First Peoples. How does the commemoration of the past shape current political realities? How has history been mobilized in contemporary debates over how to commemorate past injustices ? The essays will be peer reviewed - Award: CAD 500 and invitation to the conference 21-23 October 2022 (costs covered)
