America’s political landscape is more complicated than it used to be. Here’s my attempt to depict what I see as the seven broad camps today. Most people I know fall pretty cleanly into one of these circles (each of which has some common ground with the two adjacent circles).
Some additional points:
- The top two circles (green/yellow) are concerned first and foremost with the rise of illiberalism—disregard for the constitution, cancel culture, mob behavior, political violence. They see liberal vs illiberal as more critical right now than left vs right. In 2020, they agreed that wokeness was bad but today they’re divided on whether Trump or Harris/Biden are the lesser of two evils.
- For the middle two circles (blue/red), left vs right is the main thing. They’re not illiberal themselves but tend to focus on illiberalism from the other side while ignoring or condoning illiberalism from their own team. Both skew older and are the main consumers of traditional media, whether it be cable news or newspapers.
- The two lower circles (pink/orange) share a strong sense of grievance, place utmost importance on identity, tend to view identity groups (race, religion, sex, etc.) as monoliths, and are prone to believing conspiracy theories that fit with their worldview. Both skew younger, with woke skewing feminine and upper class and groyper skewing masculine and lower class. Both use revolutionary rhetoric, seeing the establishment as rotten to the core, and readily employ illiberal tactics under the belief that desperate times call for desperate measures.
Thoughts?

So, this is a first in D.C. politics: Yesterday @trayonwhite shared a video on his Instagram account of a woman encouraging people to go vote. (There was some light endorsement of his message, also.) The video, though, is AI-generated.

About Palestinian voices speaking at the DNC: While I cannot provide specific details, several allies connected to the entirety of the web of leadership that makes decisions on speaker slots had strongly recommended that I be able to speak at the convention to offer a balanced and nuanced perspective steeped in empathy and shared humanity for both Palestinians and Israelis. The goal was for me to talk about the suffering and hardship in Gaza and how it has affected me and my family, but it was also to have me speak as an American about the need to cherish our country and promote healing, unity, and peace and coexistence across our divisive and entrenched narratives.
I am concerned by some of the loud voices that are doing the Palestinian cause a disservice with their rhetoric, choices, threats, and unhelpful tones, which stir chaos and division instead of unity and cohesion. This is why I chose not to be in Chicago unless I had a productive role to play. I was not part of the uncommitted group, nor did I interact with their movement or leadership. I wanted to speak on my own as someone with skin in the game who grew up in Gaza but is also proud of being an American and cherishes our democracy and country, which has an important role to play in ending the suffering in Gaza and stopping the war, getting the hostages released, and supporting the journey of healing, reconciliation, and rebuilding.
I am connected with several Israeli hostages’ families who were interested in joining me on stage, including the father of an IDF soldier who is currently in Hamas’s captivity in Gaza. I regret that a unique and rare opportunity to detoxify the dysfunctional discourse around the Israel and Palestine issue through a live demonstration of the power of engagement, unity, compassion, and healing across the divided lines, modeling that bereaved Palestinians and Israelis can engage kindly and sincerely to inspire hope for a different path forward.
There are many other rational, compelling, powerful Palestinian voices who are worthy of being heard and represent diverse perspectives—it is unfortunate that none were given an opportunity to speak, especially after an Israeli family (whom I love and respect) was given a prime speaking slot. This could have been a chance to humanize the moment rather than drive a wedge deeper into the heart of this conflict.

Well, if Ukraine had started the war, people might be more attentive to what Putin says… but guess what? Putin started the war not Ukraine… just as Hamas started the war not Israel. Message? Don’t start wars and then whine.

A moment of nuance, @kamilkazani -
Our government, aka The Worst Government That Have Ever Ruled The Jewish People, consciously made a bargain with the devil, and followed up on it, because it, for a few years, managed to convince enough voters that it was acting sensibly.
The Israeli govt allowed a fringe faction of messianic Jews to decide on strategic policies, and also doubled-down with appointments of wrong people to wrong positions, so it would not be challenged. This, as many of us have been warning, turned out to be disastrous.
Now, Kamil, your expertise is Russia, the former USSR, and you sit in the US. You have 0 perspective on how a Jewish country is run. We are an unruly bunch, with 0 respect to authority, and an almost biological tendency to argue about anything and everything. Even for spite. Managing us is almost impossible. That's why we cannot have a dictatorship here. Every dictator would just have such a huge headache that he would say "agh, fuck them, I flee to St Kitts & Nevis". Look at Bibi - He tried even a mild level of it, and he is now getting chewed and spitted out. We disagree on everything, except on one very basic issue - our very existence.
So this government will soon be voted away to the trash bin of history and we will rebuild. And insist on existing.
Will the Palestinians choose to do the same, and come to the historic decision that neighbouring Jews are ok?

This clip of Abba Eban, then the Ambassador of Israel to the UN I have shared a couple of times before and I feel it is never enough. Now it is even more relevant to watch it than before
This is year 1959. West Bank is occupied by Jordan. Gaza is occupied by Egypt. Arab countries refuse to integrate fellow Arabs and instead use them as pawns to continue the endless war with Jews in the Middle East

Today is the Day of the Belarusian Written Language. Belarus is the only country where the titular nation is persecuted for the use of its language. The pro-Russian regime is working hard to destroy Belarusian identity: publishing houses are closed down, national symbols are banned, history is falsified.
