Grand problems require grand portrayals. ​La Bola Negra deals with a systemic problem involving big jargons like fascism, patriarchy, machismo, poverty, queerness, and so on. These are very complex concepts and can be hard to portray. ​But somehow, they show up in the film very clearly and naturally, letting the audience feel the weight of these realities gradually rather than lecturing or overexplaining them. ​It wouldn't have the same effect if it weren't an epic. Can't agree more that reducing La Bola Negra to a film about gay longing during war is insanely reductive when the heart of the film is the lived reality of generational repression, toxic masculinity and the inherent violence of our society built on patriarchy.

Calling it a film about “what it means to be a man who desires other men in times of war and peace” is such a diabolically reductive reading of a film that is fundamentally concerned with political violence, historical memory, and the generational consequences of repression.
