Not abolished - transferred onto the unit price. So that larger households - i.e. those with children - pay more. The punitive cost of raising the next generation of citizens and taxpayers rises once again.

Is it a principle?!! Why do successive governments keep creating rods for their own backs? People in taxable bands should be taxed - more than ever we all need to be in this together. This is why we're taxing work into oblivion.

Why should a pensioner on a £13K income be exempt from income tax when a person of working age is not? Those of working age do not receive free travel or all sorts of other discounts to which pensioners are entitled. We do not exempt people from tax based on how many dependents they have, or how much housing in their area costs, so why exempt individuals based on age?
John Healey, the chancellor, is expected to announce a 3.9 per cent rise to the full state pension while protecting those on lower incomes from income tax thetimes.com/uk/politics/art…

Ahead of John Healey's first Budget, a reminder that companies don’t pay tax - people do. And that also applies to energy suppliers and to banks. In more technical terms, companies are only legal entities and cannot bear the economic burden of tax themselves. Tax increases are therefore always passed on to real people. Shareholders will bear some of the cost through lower profits and dividends, although many 'ordinary' people own shares through their pension funds. But customers will also pay through higher prices, while employees will face lower wages. Everyone may lose if companies cut jobs and investment or move activity overseas. So, whenever someone says, “companies should pay their fair share” or “tax banks, not workers”, ask them where the money will really come from… 🤔

Thomas Sowell grew up poor in Harlem and spent his twenties as a Marxist. A job inside the federal government ended that. Asked what changed his mind, he gave a one-word answer: "facts." Chicago sharpened the habit, with Milton Friedman teaching him, and he carried it through more than 45 books and a column in over 150 newspapers. From housing to the minimum wage, he checked what policies did and ignored what their authors promised. His most famous line sits in A Conflict of Visions: "There are no solutions. There are only trade-offs." Politicians hate that sentence because it puts everyone selling solutions out of work. Every program has a price, and voters rarely pay it. Sowell lived by it. When the Reagan administration put him on an economic advisory committee, he resigned after the first meeting. He pointed to Friedman's view that some individuals "contribute more by staying out of government." He retired from writing in December 2016 at 86 and turned 96 this June. His method fits on an index card: skip the promises, check the results. Now go ahead and do that with your local ruling class.

Most tax calculators tell you how much tax you pay *now*. Ours also shows how much tax you'll pay on your next £1. Your marginal rate. We'll be publishing straight after the Budget. But here's a preview - I'd love to get feedback. taxpolicy.org.uk/uk-tax-calc…

You stand for the rule of law & equal access to democracy, or you don’t. Use of “direct action” isn’t for ‘the people’. It’s for those who would use violence to intimidate & block the democratic rights of others. Anyone whipping up violence is giving themselves away as they back the young, angry & violent over those you can’t use their fists to be heard.

This is a terrific column by @j_amesmarriott exposing the intergenerational property wealth gap. Unfortunately a series of policies on both sides of the political aisle (Labour with pensions coming into IHT, Your First Home, and paring back Business Property Relief - and Conservatives with SDLT and IHT elimination on primary residences) seem committed to making the problem of (excess) property asset allocation worse. MAKE IT CHEAPER TO BUILD HOUSES! thetimes.com/comment/columni…

On the State Pension, by adjusting the Triple Lock we will be able to look people in the eye and guarantee that a State Pension, which rises every year, will be there for them - and that they won’t have to wait into their 70s to receive it

Whatever these advisers are they are not IFAs (Independent Financial Advisers) if they place the funds with their owner! bit.ly/3VT8gYg They are restricted advisers and motivated by incentives. Avoid them! It is very misleading to abbreviate Financial Adviser as IFA

“Questions about the uprating of the State Pension are really material to whether people believe the State Pension will exist for them” - @TorstenBell at Pensions UK. Yes. Compare and contrast with Ed Davey's "keep the TL for millennials" line.

Indeed - the state pension is part of the social contract. Yeah, so is paying taxes.

This is one of the reasons we can’t have a serious conversation about things like the triple lock; as children, people in their 50s were told “your grandad fought in the war” and they don’t seem to realise we’re not talking about about their grandparents anymore.
We must give 70 year olds all the tax money in Triple Lock as thanks for defeating Hitler

This is a crap scheme but we really need to stop making every single giveaway income-dependent like this. It is creating very high effective marginal tax rates that are barely visible from above.
The cap would be £90,000 outside London. Analysis suggests that a teacher and a nurse living together would not be eligible for the Your First Home scheme thetimes.com/business/compan…
