blaming cars instead of Justin Herman for what happened to the Fillmore is like blaming Learjet instead of Jeffrey Epstein for what happened on Little St James
Replying to @carlatcole
You gotta get off this.
Cars suck. Cars destroy cities (Fillmore?). Cars are not progressive.
Stop doing “Own the YIMBYs” and focus on progressive initiatives
Walkability is progressive. Safe streets for walkers/bikers is progressive. Good public transportation is progressive.

Alex gets a little coverage from @MLNow but the framing of this is crazy and the whole tome they dont treat him like an actual candidate, nor do they seem to think that anyone who isnt a fascist can win d6. im sure that may come as a surprise to some folks in d6...!
Four years ago, District 6 was one of SF's most competitive supervisor races. This November, it looks to be much less so.
What changed?

If SFMTA's job is to make our streets more congested and harder for everyone to get around, then they can call it "mission accomplished."
Do better.
San Francisco workers shouldn't have to be this frustrated just trying to get to work.
We need streets that work for everyone.
Save your breath if you're going to say, "Cars are the problem." A car is a tool.
The problem is how we design and manage our streets, like leaving a major artery empty on weekdays while traffic floods our residential streets.

They're straight up advertising overtime abuse as part of normal pay now. Did people who voted for Lurie really think 500 more cops woupd lower overtime pay? We're just going to have 500 more at $144M/year from the city. You give a mouse a cookie...

Wiener "agrees" in theory that billionaires should be taxed—he just also thinks it's important that we don't actually tax them
Wiener and Chan agree that fortunes over $50 million and large corporations should be taxed more.
But they split on Prop. 40, California’s billionaire tax.

how can you talk about an affordability crisis when you made it so that developers don't have to build affordable units in new developments? it's sheer hypocrisy to use the affordability crisis as a talking point when you cut inclusionary zoning down to like, 5%
Bad news: Amidst an affordability crisis, elected officials in San Francisco are seeking to hasten the freezing of whole neighborhoods in amber through historic landmark streamlining legislation.
Good news: The Planning Commission voted last week to recommend that when such historic designations are instituted, the Board of Supervisors should create a pathway for the housing development rights lost to be transferred elsewhere as an offset.
This validates the spirit of the amendments our office has proposed to the legislation last month. And we look forward to introducing them at the Board of Supervisors in the months ahead.

He will always be known as Genocide Joe. That will be the legacy of this murderous scum.
A powerful indictment: Biden was fully aware of Israeli atrocities in Gaza. He just couldn't get himself to stop aiding and abetting them. He pretended to care but never suspended U.S. military aid and arms transfers, which could have stopped them. trib.al/S1pE8PQ

MORE! On the Vienna housing model!
The Vienna Housing Model.
The decisive tool was already in place: wartime rent control, imposed so soldiers’ wives would not be thrown into the street. Rent control was never repealed. Combined with postwar inflation, that made private rental construction unprofitable and opened a window of opportunity for non market housing development. Rent control took private landlords out of the land market. Land prices fell. Rent control did not merely protect tenants. It cut the flow of labor and capital value into land Rent.
Vienna’s leaders knew of Henry George’s case for a single tax on land but found a better way. They taxed apartment units instead, on a progressive scale, and kept rent control. The city then used that same tax revenue to buy the land whose price the taxes had just depressed — the result was that the city was the only serious buyer in the market when urban land became available.
Vienna also invented a better way to build affordable housing. The city buys the land, sets the housing goals and publishes the subsidy. Competing nonprofit teams — architect, builder, developer, manager — submit schemes. Stakeholder juries pick the smartest one. The result is architecturally varied housing, not the barracks other anglophone countries call “public housing”. Design quality is not a luxury. It is how you keep the middle class inside the non-market system.
One-fifth was social housing for the poor and disabled. The rest was for wage-earners, owned and run by co-ops and limited-profit housing associations. Those associations operate like ordinary companies except they may charge only cost-covering rents, must recycle surplus into more land or more buildings, and may pay only a capped return to shareholders. The city did not socialize production. It socialized the land under it in line with the Henry George Principle.
Copying the Vienna model in cities that still worship the free market for housing would surely be contentious; but the crisis Vienna faced and the results it got are not in dispute. Jobs-rich global cities are now approaching the same level of housing precarity faced by Vienna. Rent control protects tenants, but it also makes a city’s land less appetizing to international real estate investment trusts (REITs).
