This has Puck and the rest of the old heads writen all over it.
Do I listen to the former major leaguer or some random dude who thinks we need to hire the big name. I'll go with Bucky. He played at that level
The Mariners just told you exactly what they believe in.
They had Joe Espada available — a manager who's won division titles and been to October. The safe, proven name. And they passed.
Instead they hired Jason Kanzler, 36 years old, never managed a day in the majors, a guy who's spent the last few years running player development for the Cubs.
That's a philosophy hire, folks. Not a headline hire.
Here's what I keep coming back to:
A week ago, a small-market team with one of the lowest payrolls in baseball won the whole thing by developing their own and sticking to a plan. The Mariners watched that, then went and hired the guy whose entire career IS developing players. That's not a coincidence. That's a bet on how you actually build a winner.
I got my one short summer in the big leagues back in '04, and I was the young, unproven guy in that clubhouse once. I'll tell you.. the coaches who believed in development are the ones who got the most out of guys like me.
But here's the piece I hope he really brings.. the mentality it takes to win at the highest level. The best managers I've ever been around all held their guys accountable, hard, every single day. They set a standard and didn't let anybody slide, stars included.
You can develop all the talent in the world. Accountability is what turns it into winning.
Now, I'm not going to sit here and tell you it's a sure thing. It isn't. He's young, he's unproven, and Seattle is a hungry baseball town that's waited a long, long time. If the young guys don't take a step forward, this gets loud fast.
But I'll take a clear plan over a big name every time. Do the little things right, trust your development, and let it add up.
So here's my question, folks.. gutsy and smart, or too big a gamble with the window open?
Because some people think I am "Jerry", I wasn't going to comment on this. But since I am a guy in Spokane waiting for a plumber, I love this hire. And weird they hired his friend as the hitting coach, but he had no say.
The Mariners will reportedly hire Jason Kanzler as their next manager, sources tell MLB’s @DKramer_.
And this kids kids is why drugs are bad.
The #SFGiants have the system to swing some trades.
They need a lefty and Deitmers could very well be one of the best available.
Bryan Woo is a Bay Area kid and you’re probably buying low.

Very few managers if any pick their entire staff anymore. And most new hires inherit at least two or three staff members if not more already on staff. I think most people that take a manager job are pretty confident in their ability to lead people, even if they aren't the ones they chose.
I see a lot of people saying oh great. The new manager doesn't get input on this. I almost wonder maybe they have their guy and they agreed on this but it's a day that ends in y and Mariner fans have to b**** about something.
Mariners, still searching for a manager, add CJ Gillman as hitting coach. With @spencernusbaum_ and @Chandler_Rome, unlocked and free to read. nytimes.com/athletic/7739471…
He really got me and I don't have a witty comment for the man who looks like three days out of rehab he needs to go back.
