We had a great time today exploring with the land management community how we @DerbyUni can help with putting science into action on the ground, supporting an evidence-based approach. Thanks to all our contributors and attendees.
Amazing network session with some examples of the wares produced by many around Derbyshire trying to turn the tide on biodiversity loss and our climate crisis - Sadie Manning pictured here from @beadamoss with an example of five species of sphagnum cultured at their facility

Exploring the microbial diversity of #soil is fascinating! In this paper we looked at the spatial arrangements of #fungi in relation to depth, plants, and the bacterial communities that we have previously studied, in Botswana.
Our latest work from the #Kalahari shows soil #biocrusts contain unique #fungal communities that interact with bacteria & are likely involved in nutrient & C transfers with plants Open access paper frontiersin.org/journals/mic… With @drelliott0net @Steve_Hoon @rsen5

Glad to have finally done some proper first aid training which I had not adequately prioritised before. The Rescue and Emergency Care course from Derek Burdett was fantastic. If I miss an admin deadline nevermind this was worth it.
First aid training including remote, outdoor situations. All set for intrepid field trips with our students @DerbyUni @elleatkins @drelliott0net @AlessiaBani @JoanaChimpa

Learnt a lot about #acoustic #ecology and enjoyed being part of this... Some interesting projects coming up. I think acoustic monitoring is a great tool for monitoring biodiversity change over time.

I had a break from twitter, back to give it another go now. Sorry if you tried to get in touch and I missed it.

nice figure, bit animal-centric. #Bacteria and #fungi and #plants shown to have more biomass than animals. Plants 450Gt, Bacteria 70Gt, Fungi 12Gt, ALL Animals mere 2.6 Gt (carbon masses). Full version and some notes at visualcapitalist.com/all-the…

Fantastic figure, shame this is behind a paywall though in 2021! No need for that. science.org/doi/abs/10.1126/… . I think the work of @GEOBON_org on EBV's is great and we are starting to be able to understand/protect biodiversity in a new exciting way - including #soil #microbiology
Getting the big picture of #biodiversity Super article in @ScienceMagazine on the need to monitor biodiversity change across scales and levels of organization. Lovely focus on @CavenderG9 work. Delighted to see spotlight on @GEOBON_org framework DOI: 10.1126/science.acx9637

Happy #SphagnumMonday and the start of #COP26! This Sphagnum has been growing for 4 years in our sustainable greenhouse. Sphagnum grows so quickly that it's a whopping 160 cm (5ft 4") tall - the same height as Barbara! This tube is at @COP26 Peatland Pavilion because...

Shome mishtake shurely? I think EU MISSION A Soil Deal for Europe meant to say "#soil" solutions not "concrete" solutions?
.@EU_Commission will invest in soil research and awareness through the @HorizonEU mission "A Soil Deal for Europe" - Nathalie Sauze-Vandevyver @EUAgri ec.europa.eu/info/research-a… There will be a revolution in soil research and outreach! #EUSOforum #EUmissions #HorizonEU

Nice! I tried "hot composting" this year and it worked great. Worth the effort to save the planet and also save money too. Give it a try. #microbiology in action! Resources that helped me: cwmi.css.cornell.edu/factshe… + deepgreenpermaculture.com/di…
So here is an odd one for Sphagnum Monday, turned my compost heaps, have created a cubic meter of compost from 1yr kitchen / garden waste, if we could do more of this we wouldn’t need to bag up one of the worlds most useful habitats as growth medium.

Our latest paper on #carbon cycle in Australian drylands. Previously we reported on microbial composition and wind erosion of these #soils (dx.doi.org/10.1029/2018JG004…). Microbes affect both particulate and gaseous carbon transformations/transport. Still lots to learn about that.
New paper in @Geoderma_Jrnl special issue on biocrusts from Diamantina Nat Park, Australia Some biocrusts photosynthesise immediately when wet, but others don't, even though they look similar. We were intrigued. Thanks to a great team, eds & reviewers. doi.org/10.1016/j.geoderma.2…

Great idea to make academic publishing involve less unnecessary work creation. I will definitely consider this, the link is worth a read.

Our new paper is now out! Synthesis from 10 boreal peatlands shows that differences in CH4 emissions between peatland types are more likely caused by differences in production than in oxidation @INAR_FIN @ilmatiede @uef @ICOS_Finland onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/…
