It demolishes the shibboleth that Pakistan was created by the British as a buffer state for the West. What emerges instead is a story of political miscalculation, personal animosity and imperial haste. Mountbatten’s vanity, his deep-seated antipathy towards Jinnah, and his decision to compress the transfer of power into ten weeks helped turn Partition into a catastrophe. The result was one of the greatest human tragedies of the twentieth century, with hundreds of thousands massacred and millions uprooted.
