The only sane political/cultural reaction to this terrifying heat emergency is to realise we really are now on the brink of the abyss - and to move to a kind of "war economy" to haul ourselves back from destruction. Politicians, cultural figures, ordinary people must react
The heatwave scorching western Europe is the most severe and widespread ever and is only possible due to the climate crisis driven by fossil fuel burning, scientists have said. Almost half of Europe’s 850 largest cities are also enduring their worst ever heat stress, a combination of temperature and humidity, they found. Muggier conditions mean sweating is less effective at cooling the body, making heatwaves even more dangerous. The analysis comes as the UK recorded its hottest ever June temperature on Thursday, 36.7C (98.06F) in Somerset, and much of western Europe recorded a sharp rise in medical emergencies, including some deaths. In summer 2022, more than 60,000 people died due to heat in Europe. The statistical analysis needed to assess the impact of the current heatwave will take time to complete. Nonetheless, the heatwave is certain to exact a heavy toll and is also disrupting lives and livelihoods, with schools closed, hospitals struggling and rail and air journeys cancelled across the continent. The new analysis by scientists from the World Weather Attribution (WWA) consortium shows how rapidly extreme heat is worsening as carbon pollution continues to pile up in the atmosphere. As recently as 2003, a heatwave like the current one in Europe would have been 2C cooler due to the lower level of global heating at the time. In 1976, another famous heatwave year, it would have been 3.5C cooler.

Sonnet 116. Patrick's favourite. Take one minute out of your day to hear the bard's words spoken by someone who lived by them.

Obama in Portland! Never seen anything like it!
Q: Are you worried you're performing with young voters in this election? Trump: I think I'm performing well. I mean, the rallies are unbelievable. Nobody's ever seen anything like it. I have a 99% favorable number with the Republican party that you saw just came out. I'm at 99% favorable. I should hit 100.

Very very sorry to hear this. He taught me a lot about space in Dutch art and was one of the most interesting voices in Brilliant Orange

Trump forcing US companies to buy Russian diesel while Putin wages war on the entire western world, a historic low for the White House.

There is nothing obvious about many Bennet, Eisenkott, Lapid and Yair Golan voters - incl survivors of October 7 - calling for them to work w Palestinian-majority parties. This could cement a seismic shift in Israeli politics, and it coming after 3 years of war is outstanding.

Patrick Stewart was once filmed dancing and singing on the bridge of the USS Enterprise-D in 1991 as a birthday surprise for Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry. Though never intended for public release, a copy of the clip eventually surfaced as a bonus feature on a DVD. Rest in peace 🙏

The voters of EVERY change bloc party including Lieberman’s Yisrael Beiteinu prefer a coalition with Ra’am (with outside backing from the Joint List) than a unity government with Netanyahu.

Just sick
Showering Russia with offers of “deals” as it attacks civilians in Ukraine advances no US interest or value that I can see.

So basically what everyone feared would happen is happening.
Russian forces have begun taking civilians from occupied Oleshky to Russia, apparently disregarding previously announced agreements governing the operation. The operations are being conducted by the Russian military, without American representatives or teams from either side’s ombudsman office present. Russia’s state news agency TASS is openly filming the operation. There is no indication that civilians are being given a choice of where they wish to go. No buses or other vehicles designated to transport evacuees to Ukrainian-controlled territory are visible. The operation raises serious concerns that Russia is once again exploiting a humanitarian evacuation to forcibly transfer Ukrainian civilians. The parallels with the evacuation of Mariupol’s Azovstal steel plant are disturbing. Once again, Moscow appears to be disregarding agreed procedures while controlling the fate of Ukrainian civilians.

In 1978, PBS aired "I, Claudius" and "Fall of Eagles" back-to-back in the United States. Watching Patrick Stewart play Sejanus and Lenin as an 8-year-old made it seem like he was already the biggest star on Earth....which he soon would become. A true giant of stage and screen.

Patrick Stewart as Karla in Tinker Tailor, opposite Alec Guinness. He didn't even speak in any of his appearances, but conveyed so much. May his memory be a blessing.

What a heartbreaking week it has been. Sir Patrick Stewart was a friend, a colleague, and a magnificent actor. From the stage to the bridge of the Enterprise, he brought intelligence, grace, and a deep sense of humanity to everything he did. Captain Picard stood for the best of us, and so did the man who played him. I was filled with affection and admiration for him and his work. My heart goes out to Sunny and his family. He will be deeply missed.

Anyone considering buying this “radioactive” Russian diesel should recognize the risks—serious reputation damage&severe legal liability. Congress is watching & a future Administration may not look away from such criminal profiteering, even if this one does washingtonsun.com/whitehouse…
