Here's hoping that the next person to design a version control system had a teacher/mentor/peer/friend/life-partner/close-reader/editor somewhere along the way who explained what a mixed metaphor is, and why you should avoid them...

Installed beta 4 of Xcode 11, and every single Combine-related line of code now causes a crash. I was trying to work on a non-Combine feature in a completely different part of my app, and had to revert all my Combine code just to keep working. I know it’s a beta, but oof.

I hate having to install new software/plug-ins for screensharing or video-conferencing, and this just confirms every paranoid instinct I've ever had about it: medium.com/@jonathan.leitsch…

Bottom line: carefully consider the solutions you adopt for audio, video, and screen-sharing. And please don't force clients/contractors/employees to install flavor-of-the-month 3rd-party solutions just to work with you.

PS: There are no magical PR incantations that should persuade you to give Zoom a pass on this. They didn't fix a major vulnerability after due notice, and they install a local server that remains after app deletion so they can reinstall their app – without notice or permission!

I want our newsrooms and our audiences to get comfortable being uncomfortable a bit more, and be open to hearing voices that aren't their own. Voices they don't get to control. (Also, stop emailing me talking about how I need to stop saying "like" so much. PLEASE.) /FIN

The "diversity, BUT" critique of my colleague's voice isn't too much better than saying, "Sure, I'm all for gay rights, as long as they don't, like, kiss in public." Or, "Sure, all about women in the workplace, but I should never have to see them breastfeed."

👋 I was feeling all reflective and wrote up a post about a few things I used to *strongly* believe as a junior dev...which turned out not to be the full picture 😉 Tell me if you can relate! monicalent.com/blog/2019/06/…

My top wish from a post-Ive Apple: fewer curved edges on handheld devices. An iPhone, for example, which doesn't more or less require a case to prevent slipping out of your hand and breaking.

If you’re a programmer using your skills to make women or any marginalized group of people feel less safe, kindly throw away your keyboard and forget how to code. We have a responsibility to build things that help people, not hurt them.
