Here's hoping that the next person to design a version control system had a teacher/mentor/peer/friend/life-partner/close-reader/editor somewhere along the way who explained what a mixed metaphor is, and why you should avoid them...
Installed beta 4 of Xcode 11, and every single Combine-related line of code now causes a crash. I was trying to work on a non-Combine feature in a completely different part of my app, and had to revert all my Combine code just to keep working. I know it’s a beta, but oof.

I was really keen to take some of the new watchOS 6 features for a spin, and work on some stand-alone apps for it, but the installation process has put me off completely.

Why do we put so much effort into writing job openings at Basecamp? Partly as a revulsion to trash like this. angel.co/company/apex-10/job…
PS: There are no magical PR incantations that should persuade you to give Zoom a pass on this. They didn't fix a major vulnerability after due notice, and they install a local server that remains after app deletion so they can reinstall their app – without notice or permission!
Bottom line: carefully consider the solutions you adopt for audio, video, and screen-sharing. And please don't force clients/contractors/employees to install flavor-of-the-month 3rd-party solutions just to work with you.
And how many people who need to do this cleanup are comfortable opening up Terminal and entering this?
pkill "ZoomOpener"; rm -rf ~/.zoomus; touch ~/.zoomus && chmod 000 ~/.zoomus;
I found a task from February in OmniFocus about cleaning up Zoom: "This was some video conferencing software I installed for an interview, and ZoomOpener is still lurking in Activity Monitor, even after I deleted the main app. Grr."
This is the worst of toxic tech: when something you install quickly to facilitate a one-off business or social interaction becomes a long-term liability. More maintenance to add to your to-do list.
TLDR: "All a website would need to do is embed the above (code) in their website and any Zoom user will be instantly connected with their video running."
I hate having to install new software/plug-ins for screensharing or video-conferencing, and this just confirms every paranoid instinct I've ever had about it:

I want our newsrooms and our audiences to get comfortable being uncomfortable a bit more, and be open to hearing voices that aren't their own. Voices they don't get to control. (Also, stop emailing me talking about how I need to stop saying "like" so much. PLEASE.)

The "diversity, BUT" critique of my colleague's voice isn't too much better than saying, "Sure, I'm all for gay rights, as long as they don't, like, kiss in public." Or, "Sure, all about women in the workplace, but I should never have to see them breastfeed."

👋 I was feeling all reflective and wrote up a post about a few things I used to *strongly* believe as a junior dev...which turned out not to be the full picture 😉 Tell me if you can relate! monicalent.com/blog/2019/06/…
