Very demanding to organize those field projects, but very satisfying - both for the science and the human relationships. So many memories...
10 years later funny story, but suffered a lot during the desert part - good studies though with @DrJPeriard and @ephysiol

Thank you for highlighting this issue. Note: 🧠EHS does not necessarily involve collapse (CNS dysfunction can be disorientation, confusion...) 💦EHS patients are still sweating (dry skin is classical HS, not EHS) IOC consensus: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/3388… pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/3615…
🚑 You’re the Doctor: A 25-year-old marathon runner collapses at the finish line. Bystanders say he was confused and agitated before collapsing. On arrival: •BP: 88/60 mmHg •HR: 145 bpm •Temp: 41°C (105.8°F) •RR: 30/min •Skin: Hot, dry, no sweating. What’s your next step? 🩺 A. IV fluids and antipyretics 🌡️ B. Rapid sequence intubation 🛏️ C. Ice-water immersion 🧊 D. Administer adrenaline 💉 E. CT brain to rule out stroke 🧠 👇 Comment your answer & reasoning! #MedTwitter #FOAMed #EmergencyMedicine #MedicalEducation #MedStudentTwitter #DoctorLife #HeatStroke #CriticalCare

For those interested in this topic: 👟Active recovery vs CWI vs HWI in elite athletes: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/3772… 🛁Recovery and CWI/ice usage: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/3905… 🧊CWI/ice post injury: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/3923…
Why are we still ice bathing? Robust evidence shows cold-water immersion after training INHIBITS recovery by blunting muscle protein synthesis and anabolic signaling. Why, then, are we still doing it? It's culturally ingrained at this point. Athletes are jumping in cold tubs because that's what we do, and fitness influencers have more sway than credible scientific experts. Only in unique circumstances, e.g., between successive competitive heats, is there any potential benefit. 🔗skepticalinquirer.org/exclus… #science #exercise
