One wild aspect of elected office is way Republicans use LGBTQ politicians as a confessional booth. Nearly every day in Montana, Republicans would apologize for their votes, tell me they wish the culture war would move on, etc. But rarely would they actually change their vote.
My GOP colleagues, who privately tell me they don't hate LGBTQ+ people, should find the courage to reject the dehumanizing rhetoric. Your silence is deafening.

Women know that men don’t scheme to “dress like girls” to assault them. They do it every day in broad daylight. And the ones in power protect each other to keep it quiet. Just ask the House Ethics Committee. Or the President-elect of the United States. Leave women alone.
I think @AOC’s argument about transgender bathroom bans is…pretty much perfect

can’t imagine there’s anything more cathartic for a white southern conservative than getting to personally segregate a restroom
I never thought we would need a sign for this, but women's restrooms are for BIOLOGICAL women. Not men.

Sorry but this is an abdication of responsibility.
I’m not here to fight about bathrooms. I’m here to fight for Delawareans and to bring down costs facing families.

y’all ever think about how the Democrats haven’t won a majority of the white vote since 1964, and what the Democrats did in 1965

Dems should resist any group or special interest that pressures them to take positions opposed by the electoral majority essential to win, whether that’s big corporations, rich donors, nonprofits, whoever. This isn’t about blaming specific groups for defeat - it’s about what’s required to win.

There is a push among some orgs, "moderate" legislators, and even trans people to "give up the sports issue" in hopes that will stop hate. I have watched moderates try this in 23 state houses. It doesn't work. There's no amount of give you can offer that stops them from taking.

I've had similar experiences with my GOP colleagues. They vote against LGBTQ+ rights and then tell me, "You know I don't really believe that nonsense. It's nothing against you." I still work with them if it means getting things done for Vermont. But this is the reality.

Beshear knows intuitively what so few Dems grasp. You can take political decisions that are politically controversial, and even SHOULD, if it fits in your value set. Voters prefer candidates who are genuine and are more willing to forgive positions than lack of sincerity.

The Office of Government Efficiency is off to a great start with split leadership: two people to do the work of one person. Yeah, this seems REALLY efficient.

1. Some pundits want to blame transgender people for Harris' defeat. Now, America's first transgender Congresswoman Sarah McBride is hitting back: "The party that was focused on culture wars and trans people was the Republican Party." Subscribe to support my journalism.

Governor Andy Beshear, in a Trump +30 state, gives advice to Democrats: Do not throw LGBTQ+ people under the bus, it will not work. His advice to dems: Lead on your values. This man ran on a fully inclusive campaign in 2023 and won. He received the same kind of ads Harris did.

Some context that I think is important: in addition to adopting ranked choice voting, Portland got rid of its May Primary for Mayor/City Council. Voter turnout rates in general elections are MUCH higher, so even with some. undervoting, participation in local races is still way up
Portland’s ranked-choice debut causes voter engagement to crater. 1 in 5 who cast ballots chose no one for City Council In east Portland, the city's poorest & most racially diverse quadrant, it was 29%. 11% of residents who voted sat out mayor's race. oregonlive.com/politics/2024…

"If what you want is a centrist campaign that's quiet on trans issues, tough on the border, distances itself from Palestinians, talks a lot about law and order, and reaches out to moderate Republicans, that candidate existed and she just lost" ~John Oliver on dems moving right

A lot of Democrats at the congressional and local level have some deep reflecting to do considering that the way they've spoken about unhoused people, and the plans they have for them, are indistinguishable from Trump's.
I do think at some point, as a journalist, it’s your responsibility to read between the lines a little bit
