There are days when I miss Uber in the Philippines. Tonight. I miss them tonight. I’m walking home, and every few kilometers I’m looking at Grab’s interface to see if I can spend under US5$ to ride the rest of the way.
I remember someone describing it as split level Christianity. We compartmentalize. Church is church and everywhere else is everywhere else. We are a country of shortcuts & personal relations. Our corruption springs partly from that, IMO.
The thing about art is you need room for mistakes. Mis-takes. Bad takes. Wasted Effort. The shitty illustrations. The paintings you want to burn. All of it necessary. You can’t skip it because that’s how you grow. 1/
When the veteran actor tells you to have fun, or love the process, they’re not being condescending. They’re giving you a survival strategy.
Ditto when you paint in a new medium. Or buy junk you can use for your next art piece. 6/

We don't really want reality in our screenwriting. We want what rings true and what makes us feel something.
Realism is never a goal in itself. Emotional truth is.

In VO coaching, pushy ≠ good. YOU do the work. If your coach keeps telling you what to do, what type of VO to chase, who to pay, or books a session where a "pro" insults you and calls it growth, you've hired a bully, not a coach. That's not helping you, it's directing your life
Parent: You should make more realistic paintings.
Dex: I agree.
Parent: realistic paintings show what's happening in real life—
Dex: No, they don't. Not really.

Badly. But if you lurk anywhere actors post in numbers, you’ll understand that it’s part of the gig., and it gets easier. Most days knowing that helps.

Today I learned a term called 'Delayed Selfhood': When a child lives in a high-stress survival mode, their brain prioritizes the amygdala (the fear center) over the prefrontal cortex (the social and emotional learning center). When that person finally reaches a safe place in adulthood( financially or physically ), the "freeze" thaws, and they suddenly have to learn things like social cues or how to trust that others learned at age five.. 1//3
