Today I learned a term called 'Delayed Selfhood': When a child lives in a high-stress survival mode, their brain prioritizes the amygdala (the fear center) over the prefrontal cortex (the social and emotional learning center). When that person finally reaches a safe place in adulthood( financially or physically ), the "freeze" thaws, and they suddenly have to learn things like social cues or how to trust that others learned at age five.. 1//3

Ateneo Art Gallery will hold a free screening of 'Sabangan,' a 1983 documentary film that centers the lives of the Remontados and their struggles against the Kaliwa-Kanan Dam proposed by the Marcos family, on November 12, 5 to 7 PM at the Ben Chan ArtSuite.
The screening will be followed by a talkback session with filmmaker Jose Cuaresma, moderated by Assistant Professor Rosemarie O. Roque.

One thing I wish new VAs understood: Getting an agent isn't the top of your mountain. It's actually the bottom of another, larger mountain. You not only have to be competitive enough to GET an agent. You now have to compete against me, your peers, AND the celebrities you look up to just to get heard by casting. When people say you need to be READY for an agent, that's part of what they're talking about. The other part is the lifestyle changes no one prepares you for.
But please know, not every audition you submit to an agent gets heard. Many times your agent is only allowed to send their top 3, top 5 auditions & you gotta make it through THAT cut first. That's why I laugh whenever I hear people complain about casting calls closing too early & how it's a waste of time. That's a daily occurrence with big agency work.
Unfortunately, you don't get to coast at an agency, no matter how glamorous or easy you fantasize it is once you have an agent. You get an agent and have to learn entirely new exercises to build entirely new muscles you didn't know you needed. Your talent has to be ELITE COMPETITIVE, not just good enough. Anyone in this business long enough has to constantly learn new things and get better. Or they find other non-talent ways around that part lol. But if you expect to get an agent and coast, you've got some hard truths coming.

An agent helps if your talent is competitive. If it's not, there's not a lot an agent can do for you until it is. But an agent isn't required to book good things, a lot of people do well & even work full time without one. Agents do have a handle on the bigger things, but nobody controls everything. You can absolutely still catch a break & get good work!

You are NOT lazy. You are exhausted from the grief and trauma you’ve endured. Also, one very real response to trauma is shutting down - according to polyvagal theory this is called dorsal vagal shut-down. Its when you freeze and maybe even dissociate, have little energy, and feel stuck. Obviously we are accountable for the healing, AND also, please give yourself GRACE. XO, Dr. Jen

This is a message to my struggling voice actors out there: Make things for YOU.
It's a super rough industry with a hyper competitive market, if you wanna stay sane while also improving your craft, make your own projects, little things like fandubs/comic dubs, because there's no 100% guarantee that you'll get to work for anyone else in this career, you have to want to do it for you, and don't let rejection kick you to the curb! I believe in you all, we're all gonna make it...
