I was in Yaoundé for a conference when my mother called. She didn’t know I was in town. My grandmother had been rushed to a hospital just a short distance from where I was.
When I arrived, all her children and grandchildren were there. Only days earlier, we had been scattered across different towns and countries. Yet somehow, we had all found ourselves in the same city, as though summoned by an invisible hand.
I later went home, only to receive the news that she had left us. When I returned, she lay there, peaceful.
From her womb came generations, including many successful businesspeople. But what stays with me most is what she taught us:
1. The love and fear of God.
2. Solidarity with one another.
3. Dignity and self-respect. Ah, this woman had class!
To this day, she remains the only nurse who ever gave me painless injections.
Wealth can come and go. The love and fear of God remind us that our actions have consequences. Solidarity keeps us grounded when life becomes hard. And dignity-the courage to stand tall, chin held high, even in chains-is what makes your presence felt and your name remembered.

Any police officer, gendarme or soldier who brutalises an unarmed citizen has chosen the wrong profession. They must reassure citizens so as to turn them into allies in the fulfilment of their mission, rather than making them potential enemies.
The State is an abstraction. Only citizens are concrete, living beings. When you shoot at them, they bleed, suffer and die. This is not the case with the State. The State is a shield for the usurpers, a monster they use to sow terror in order to confiscate what belongs to all citizens and the community, whilst making security forces believe that they are the bulwark protecting the common good. National security and defence personnel are an integral part of the people. The overwhelming majority of them come from working-class backgrounds. Woe betide them if they forget this.
