Do Honey Nut Cheerios now taste like cigarette ashes to anybody else or is it just me? It’s like this for months.

idk, maybe it's because i lived through the livejournal/ffnet/wattpad/tumblr/etc censorship purges, but people downloading their favorites fics for personal archival and sharing them when the originals are inaccessible has always been a huge part of keeping fandom culture alive

It's me, your friendly neighborhood editor, here to remind you that sometimes when you have the urge to write "suddenly" what you really want is a paragraph break.
Something Kaeluc to read if you’re suffering today.
If you want to throw a comment my way from reading any of my fics while AO3 is down, you can just @ me or hit my strawpage!

Seeing a lot of people upset that others have downloaded their work from AO3.
Downloading is a basic function of the site. Any fic can be downloaded from the top of the page. If you’re uncomfortable with people downloading your work, you shouldn’t put it somewhere that allows it.
I know a lot of people are new to fandom, but the creation and sharing of aggregate fic archives is not new. This is a tried and true practice; this is just the first time you’re seeing it en mass.
You see it a lot in older fandoms, it’s how many fandom classic works have survived purges and strikethroughs and archive 404s.
If you want control, don’t post publicly. But you won’t get engagement. It’s a trade off (and not even one that is foolproof).
I hate to say this, but if they’re on AO3, your fics have been scraped. Even the locked ones. Posting your work to a public site with free accounts means it will be scraped somehow. This is not a fight we are able to win at this point, and AO3 can do no more about it than any other site.
People sharing downloaded fic files isn’t putting your safe works at risk, because they’ve not been safe to begin with. The scrape checkers aren’t checking against every ai scrape ever, just a few public datasets. It is CONSTANTLY happening.
if ao3 means so much to you and is such a big part of your daily life that you feel the weight of its absence now, let it also be a reminder about the importance of leaving kudos and comments even if its just a simple "i loved this!" to show writers you care about their hard work

We estimate that service restoration for #AO3 will take around 2 weeks but it could be up to 4 weeks. We are hopeful that we will be able to bring the site back up in a degraded state sooner. Refer to our status page for updates: otwstatus.org/
#AO3 maintenance is in progress. We expect it to take at least 12 hours, but it may take longer. We will provide updates as necessary. Refer to our status page for updates: otwstatus.org/incidents/g12j…
Well shit.
Uh. I’ll get some epubs up on a website for you guys if you want downloads of my fics during the AO3 maintenance…

If you are feeling similarly distraught by the loss of AO3, please make sure your favourite writers know how much you missed them when it comes back!!
Let's all leave some adoring comments today, spread some good vibes 🥰
Genuinely what are people going on about.
All this talk of critiquing fanfiction started from a general writing advice tweet.
General writing advice isn’t critique. Critique is targeted. If you feel attacked by someone suggesting to use less italics, you have GOT to stand up.
7 years ago I met someone so important to me. She saved my life, and where there was only one set of footprints, that’s where she carried me. 🫶
