In a 1990 graduate Critical Theory seminar, we were openly discussing how Islam could be leveraged as a weapon against the hegemony of Western culture. One young Jewish woman rightly asked what that allegiance might mean for women. The (female) Prof made a face and said "well there are some things the community just wont allow." This is not the kind of Shabbat message I usually want to share, but I feel compelled to share an experience I had today.
I am currently in Scotland visiting my mother, and today I went for a haircut at Westend Hair in Glasgow.
I mentioned to the man cutting my hair that I was visiting from Israel. He immediately asked whether I was worried about Israel, given that it had, in his words, alienated the entire world.
Within about ten minutes, he had told me that Israel was responsible for the worldwide tsunami of Jew-hate, that 7 October was an inside job, and implied that the massacre was a reaction to 80 years of Israeli actions. He also claimed that the attack at Bondi would never have happened without the war in Gaza, and responded to Jew-hate with the equivalent of “all lives matter”.
I shut down the conversation, but it was an extremely uncomfortable and depressing experience. What made it worse was that he was in the middle of cutting my hair. I couldn't simply get up and leave.
I am so utterly sick of non-Jews presuming to tell Jews what Jew-hate is, what causes it and how we should understand our own experiences. The confidence with which some people dismiss Jewish experiences while insisting that their own understanding is more legitimate is astonishing.
I could not be more glad that I made Aliyah. Experiences like this remind me why I am so happy to call Israel home.

I was a white-collar criminal. Before I flipped and cooperated with federal investigators, I used the word “mistake” to explain away my own misconduct, too.
That doesn’t prove your wife intentionally did anything wrong. But calling something a mistake doesn’t establish that it was one, either.
