Will never address a Pharmacist as " Dr" 📌

Pharmacy has failed to evolve adequately in Uganda. People keep wondering what pharmacists do in hospitals, given how little visibility they seem to have in patient management. It's now even more concerning when you are a "Doctor" who cannot diagnose a simple sore throat. Perhaps it would be more appropriate to introduce yourself to a patient as a "doctor who makes drugs" or, better still, the Dr. who helps identify the most effective medicines in an era increasingly challenged by antimicrobial resistance and drug resistance! @PharmacistsUg, the title Dr. only looks impressive when you don't have it. We expect a lot more from our dear pharmacists. We need to see greater clinical involvement and meaningful contributions to patient care.

The incident in question involved one Dickens Muhwezi Ashaba, the driver of vehicle number UA 888 AX, who allegedly violated traffic lights at Lugogo on 23rd October. When stopped by traffic officers, he reportedly became violent and started recording the officers. If this differs from what actually transpired, let the driver come out and challenge it with facts. We are open to correction but such corrections must be based on what actually happened. One question worth asking is: If this incident happened on 23rd October, why is it only being brought to public attention a week later? This is a legitimate question, although the timing of a complaint does not on its own invalidate it. From our engagements with the public, I believe many of you are familiar with the proper channels through which complaints against traffic officers can be lodged. You also know that we do not tolerate misconduct by our officers. Whenever complaints are brought to our attention, we investigate and take appropriate action, including disciplinary proceedings and prosecution where wrongdoing is established. However our experience has also shown that some incidents shared on social media are presented without the full context sometimes with the apparent intention of attracting likes, followers and public attention rather than seeking genuine redress. Nevertheless every complaint deserves to be examined on its own merits. We are also engaging our legal team to establish the appropriate legal remedies available in cases where individuals deliberately publish misleading accounts or make allegations that may be defamatory. It is important to appreciate that motorists sometimes have an advantage over officers when it comes to controlling the narrative on social media. A motorist may record an encounter and immediately publish it to an audience of thousands, while the officer is occupied executing official duties. This is precisely why we have encouraged our officers to operate in environments with CCTV coverage wherever possible and to use their smartphones to document encounters, particularly where there is reason to believe that an incident may subsequently be misrepresented. Let me make this very clear: We are not suggesting that our officers cannot do wrong. They can and when they do they must be held accountable. We will never shield an officer who has misconducted themselves. Equally, however, we should not allow officers to be unfairly condemned or subjected to public judgment before the facts have been established. Your complaints will be received and handled through the appropriate channels. There is also Police Standards Unit (PSU), Bukoto on the toll-free line 0800 199 199. The Unit provides an additional channel through which complaints against police officers can be reported for appropriate attention and action. Do not suffer in silence or resort to social media alone when there are established channels available to seek redress. Your complaints deserve to be heard and properly investigated. To the rest of the readers and viewers, I urge you not to be carried away by sympathy or emotions whenever an incident involving a police officer appears on social media. Be guided by facts not just by what you see in a recording or read in a post. Social media can inform but it can also mislead when information is presented selectively. Our position remains simple: Accountability for errant officers, fairness to officers performing their duties and justice based on established facts. We remain committed to serving the public, protecting lives and ensuring that the law is applied fairly and without fear or favour. I COME IN PEACE
