Occasional reminder that until very recently the telephone network was designed to continue running uninterrupted in the event of a mass power cut. Choices were made.
🚨 NEW: The Government's "Black Sky" contingency plans for a national water or power blackout - Around 100 BBC staff would be deployed to run an emergency RM radio studio stocked with enough food, water and fuel to keep it running for 3 days - The BBC would broadcast pre-written Government scripts through the studio, including how to ration water, what to do if toilets stop working and which food to eat first (see scripts below) - Radio masts would switch to diesel generators to keep broadcasts going for up to 72 hours without electricity - BBC teams would use satellite phones to stay in contact, with agreed meeting points and backup arrangements if those phones stop working - They would also report from emergency centres across the UK using satellite-equipped BBC vehicles to help keep information flowing to the public - Emergency services would have alternative ways to communicate if mobile phone networks stopped working - The Government is putting £70m towards aircraft that could restore mobile phone and internet coverage across the UK for over a week

The fact they avoid northern France but visit southern England is not mere happenstance. The French have no doubt done something terrible to the Raven which we are not privy to

my favourite thing about rescued baby walruses is that its geniunely critical to their health that they are cuddled 24/7 for like two years just clinically clingy blobs
what an adorable baby 😭 walrus calves stay with their mothers for a couple of years compared to seals who only take care of their pups for weeks. this sweet baby will need a lot of care and I believe they were rescued by the Alaska sealife center 🥺🥰

There is a common view that medieval people adapted to high child mortality by becoming more emotionally distant from them. Modern scholarship has demolished this: medieval people loved their children just as much as us, made vast sacrifices for them, and expected little in return. So the @SevaUT is directionally right here in saying that medieval people went about permanently traumatised. Most people had three or four children, of whom one or two died. This was torment for them. The shadow of death over English childhood did not lift with the passing of the Middle Ages. My great-grandmother, whom I knew well, was born in 1906, when 15% of children died in their first year, against 25% in the Middle Ages. My grandmother, who is still alive, was the only one of her several siblings to survive her first year. The past is very near.

Concerned that Houthis have considerably better inbox management than me.
You have to email the Houthis if you want your ship to cross the Red Sea. They reply within 24hrs

"increase burden on firms" And it's simply stating the wage in a job advertisement. What a genuinely pathetic boot licking take to have
Silly idea & will increase burden on firms at time of a job crisis. Plus British people are squeamish re: chatting about their salaries - they'd rather discuss their sex lives than reveal what they earn.

Got my visit to my central London optician in to get my old lady glasses ordered and back in time to not get fined at the Sainsbury’s car park. A win, honestly.

The idea that the Chinese thought 19th c Brits were born and lived their whole lives at sea is very funny
Some incredible 19thC Chinese popular myths about Europeans & oddly poetic descriptions: "breaks of eagles, eyes of cats, long legs which could not be bent, making it impossible for them to run or jump. Their green eyes could not stand daylight at noon." Aquatic-only living.

"He committed rape and sexual assault and he's been sent to prison. This is political correctness gone mad" writes a walking red flag
Replying to @robinmonotti
He had anal sex during a bout of concessional vaginal sex. He groped someone's tits at a bar, he put his head provocatively in someone's lap and he forced a snog on someone while people were looking on - all about two decades ago. For which, he is facing a long stretch.

Now Russell Brand's been convicted of rape, we need to talk about Sylvie Berki. Because she can't speak for herself. In 2014, Ms Berki said she'd been assaulted by Russell Brand. But if she talks about it, even now, she risks jail.
