Gemini and Gemma, mostly pre-training (又菜又爱玩). past (?) life: graph machine learning

It's happened, I am a benchmark now
Today, we shared how Google’s Graph Mining and Graph Learning teams used Gemini 4 Argon with Teamwork agent in @GoogleAntigravity to solve a different class of internal engineering bottleneck: compressing months of low-level RDMA networking and custom TPU kernel development into hours. Specifically, improvements include accelerated graph algorithms with FarArray (up to 180x faster, 22x less RAM) and custom TPU kernels for Graph Neural Networks that run 8–15x faster than native JAX with massive HBM savings. For me, this update is a full-circle experience: Graph Mining contributed deeply to Gemini Data via deduping and data curation over time, and now Gemini is giving back by scaling and improving Graph Mining library! This is also a close collaboration amongst our Graph Mining and Teamwork teams, together with the Antigravity and Gemini teams. Congratulations! Read the full blog: antigravity.google/blog/gemi…

Benchmarks, especially long horizon ones, are so harness dependent it’s crazy
Gemini 4 Argon is underrated 😱. When auditing the traces, we found that Pi Harness just ends the run whenever it hits a fallback (e.g. for security task) in 20% of the runs. We rerun Argon with Antigravity Harness, and now it beats Astra and sits right behind Opus 5.5. Congrats to the team @GoogleDeepMind and looking forward to the new ckpt.

cc @htihle – you mentioned antigravity harness was not available to you, is it still the case?

The Gemini Large Scale Pretrain team is hiring a Research Engineer in London or MTV! The team works across the pretrain stack: research codebases, distributed training infra, data pipelines, tooling for training dynamics analysis, and most importantly using Gemini to accelerate our work! 🚀 If you're an engineer who has a strong "whatever it takes" attitude and is not afraid of spending tokens, apply here with some showcase work: google.com/about/careers/app… No particular qualifications needed, and we welcome early career applicants. Join if you want me to bug you with refactors to enable [new AGI compute multiplier]! 👀

I’m happy to share that our team's work on PiPNN—an ultra-scalable algorithm for high-dimensional Nearest Neighbor Search—has won three awards at KDD’26, VecDB’26, and SISAP’26 with up to 78x speedup on index build. Nearest-neighbor search is fundamental to deduping in data curation and embedding-driven retrieval for RAG for LLMs. It is great to see our work recognized across the community: Best Paper at KDD’26: PiPNN: A Framework for Ultra-Scalable Graph-Based Nearest Neighbor Indexing. This paper introduces the PiPNN framework, which delivers an order-of-magnitude speedup for building navigable proximity graphs. (dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/37708…) Best Paper at VecDB’26: Turbocharging PiPNN for Proximity and 𝑘-NN Graph Building. The paper improved the original PIPNN kernels, resulting in an additional 8x speedup (up to a 78x total speedup!), and introduced a highly optimized GPU version. (openreview.net/forum?id=8Gzb…) 1st Place at the SISAP’26 Challenge: Our PiPNN-based solution ranked 1st for Task 1, which challenged teams to develop the fastest k-NN graph building algorithm. (sisap-challenges.github.io/2…) Nearest-neighbor search is an important part of Data Curation for LLMs, and retrieval for RAG pipelines, and it only becomes more important as we move to more long-horizon agents and handling long-context inference-time scaling. Congratulations to the team behind this work: Tobias Rubel, Richard Wen (UMD), Guy Blelloch, Laxman Dhulipala, Lars Gottesbüren(github.com/larsgottesbueren), Jakub Łącki, and Vahab Mirrokni.

probably nothing
The X Safety team conducted an investigation into suspected Chinese inauthentic accounts involved in influence operations: We identified a bot farm of approximately 200,000 accounts. Within this farm, we found 200 accounts posting in a manner that could manipulate a legitimate debate about American AI and energy policy. These posts contained claims that AI data centers are driving up household electricity prices and straining the grid. Others included AI-generated cartoons that depicted data-center operators enriching themselves at the public's expense. We remain committed to maintaining an open and authentic platform where people debate topics of public interest. We take seriously any attempts to undermine the integrity of the global town square and suspend accounts that violate our Authenticity policy.

imagine comparing a Toyota Corolla vs. BMW x5 (with an upper-tier trim) this is the same budget-wise
M5 Ultra Studio vs RTX PRO 6000 1.2 TB/s in a single M5 Ultra Mac Studio is impressive, however, it is still NOWHERE near 2x/4x/8x RTX PRO 6000 setups - Each RTX PRO 6000 has 1.792 TB/s of memory bandwidth - Tensor Parallelism across 2^n GPUs shards the model So, for 8x RTX PRO 6000s, we have 8 memory controllers processing things in parallel, which is about ~14.3 TB/s* of aggregate local memory bandwidth Capacity is not everything > Utilizing that capacity matters > Especially for parallel agentic workflows and sub-agents *Full 14.3 TB/s end to end is theoretical due to TP communication and PCIe overhead
