Right now the £180 licence is only needed for live TV or BBC iPlayer - if you only watch Netflix, Disney+ or YouTube on-demand you can legally opt out, and 3.7m homes do. As the BBC's Charter expires in Dec 2027, MPs want that loophole closed from Jan 2028 so all on-demand counts too. The government isn't "modernising" the licence fee, it's turning it into a straight-up BBC poll tax on Netflix and YouTube because it knows the BBC can't survive if people are actually given a choice not to pay for it. independent.co.uk/news/uk/po…

SpaceX has just released the video of the first operational @Starlink V3 satellites being deployed into orbit from Starship. One of the best shots they've ever gotten.

lol remember that time there were people who thought only they could be trusted to be the gatekeepers of AI but then the Chinese gave it away to everyone for free? remember who they were for next time.

It is deeply shameful what OpenAI and Anthropic are doing. They are trying to slow others down so they can maintain their lead; if they don't their companies are over. Don't fall for it. There's sensible regulation to be had in AI, but these are the last two groups to listen to.

This doesn’t come as a surprise to the ~1% that have been paying attention the last couple years. To the other 99% of folks; highly recommend being extra vigilant. Texts, emails, all sorts of spam is about to get 100x more convincing.

Concentration of power, capabilities and economic wealth is the biggest risk in AI. We need open science and open-source more than ever!

Introducing Claude Opus 4.8: it builds on Opus 4.7 with sharper judgment, more honesty about its own progress, and the ability to work independently for longer than its predecessors. Available today at the same price.
