April 20, 1923: Planners of the Bear Mountain Bridge, to be built over the Hudson River in upstate New York, reveal it will be the longest suspension bridge in the world at 1,632 feet. It will surpass the Williamsburg Bridge in New York City (1,600 feet) when opened in 1924.
