My thanks to the Chicago Tribune for memorializing my smart and pretty mom today. It’s still beyond me that she is gone

Fascinated, impressed and heartbroken by this incredible obituary. Martha's mom, Louise, was an amazing person who did much great and good work in the world.

Replying to @bhargreaves
Not true. It’s a great, cost-effective way to prevent the loss of birds already facing steep declines. Complaining about it is childish

“Arabs don’t produce literature” is really something you can only say if you’ve never had a moment’s contact with genuine civilization. A mind totally consumed by television and self-help books.
Malcolm Gladwell is a fucking fraud and has made a career and millions just spewing bullshit that falls apart if you have a working brain or decide to lightly fact-check him. A phenomenally stupid man and grifter.
I have just published a piece that is very important to me. It's about why so many "progressives" and people on "the left" are lying to us right now about crime, safety, and repression, and what we should be doing instead. equalityalec.substack.com/p/…

🚨 We urgently need blankets at our Philadelphia headquarters! 🚨
Our Animal Law Enforcement team recently rescued a large group of cats, many of whom are battling panleukopenia, a highly contagious and potentially life-threatening disease.
The cats are being cared for in isolation areas, and our team is taking every precaution to protect them and the other animals in our care. Staff wear personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow strict cleaning and sanitation protocols to help prevent the virus from spreading. We take the health and safety of every animal here incredibly seriously.
As part of these precautions, we have to throw away the blankets these cats use during each cleaning to reduce the risk of spreading the virus. This means we’re going through blankets much faster than usual and urgently need donations to help keep our cats warm and comfortable.
If you have extra blankets to spare, we could really use them right now! Donations can be dropped off at 350 E Erie Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19134. You can also shop our Amazon wishlist: amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/2Y…
Thank you for always showing up for the animals who need us most! ❤️

“The research from scientists at Columbia Univ shows that when water is exposed to tiny microplastic it releases highly reactive chemicals. These chemicals, known as reactive oxygen species, are known to contribute to heart disease, cancer & neurological diseases like Alzheimers”

When a non-expert writes a history of the Middle East. The very first page of Simon Sebag Montefiore, “The Cauldron: the Making Of The Modern Middle East”. First, nobody refers to Mutanabbi as “a Syrian poet”. He is the classical Arab poet. Secondly, this is a bad translation of his famous line of poetry. Not knowing Arabic, he could not tell. It should have been: “The horses, the night, and the desert know me well;
The sword, the spear, the parchment, and the pen.”

Given how much people resist even modest food system reforms like the proposed foie gras ban in DC, it can be tempting to moderate our ambitions about this issue. I think this is a mistake. In my view, we should pressure the international community to set a goal of banning industrial animal agriculture by 2050.
Industrial animal agriculture causes massive and unnecessary harm to animal welfare, public health, and the environment. It has no place in modern civilization, and there are ample legal instruments and precedents for coordinating internationally around a global transition over the next quarter century.

Vegans are right about everything. We really have no collective moral conscience when it comes to animal suffering. Shameful
