Precisely C.S. Lewis's point in The Screwtape Letters: the enemy doesn't need to ruin you, he only needs to distract you. Screwtape finds that a reliable way to lead a patient to hell is to distract him with jargon, for instance. Have the patient evaluate ideas not by their content but by their labels ensures that he never engages meaningfully with their content. Another method is to fix his attention on the "stream of immediate sense experiences," so that his mind is drawn away from universal issues and he no longer thoughtfully engages with things that matter. The path to hell is not so much paved by grand sins than it is by small, constant distractions from what really matters. The path to goodness begins with reclaiming your attention, and turning your eyes from the endless stream. Wasting time "doomscrolling" is not neutral. It distracts you from doing good in the world.
Simone Weil’s greatest insight was that attention is the foundation of morality and that letting your attention span degrade is the first step on the road to hell

the annual social cost of cancer and auto accidents are very roughly equivalent imagine a new cancer drug came out that reduced mortality by 90% across *every* cancer And the AMA aggressively lobbied against it because of its potential suppressive impact on hospital visits and surgeries... That is the unions wrt to autonomous robotaxis right now.
Waymo is so good at saving lives that if it were a new drug in trial, it would hit the bar for being unblinded and made immediately available to the control group for ethical reasons. @MorePerfectUS would prefer to keep killing pedestrians.

Colleges finally concede: you don't need to come here anymore. It's just as good (even better) to take classes online. Most online schools are free. We've been raising tuitions 10% a year for 50 years only because you've been stupid enough to borrow it and pay us.

One advantage of having many distinct sovereign nations instead of a single world government is that they can try different policies and we can see which work best.

The reason 90% of Americans commute by car is the automobile industry has been writing US transportation policy for a century and driving is subsidized and prioritized over every other consideration including the mobility, health, safety and life of anyone not currently in a car.
This argument is insulting. 90% of commutes are by car. There is no mechanism by which the tiny share of Americans who don't use cars are "subsidizing" the entire country's infrastructure. If most Americans both pay taxes and use roads, that's an internalized cost. If you want to say it only counts as unsubsidized if done in the form of direct user fees, you can do that, but you'd basically be arguing for a completely different radical libertarian society in which no services are funded by taxes. Since you're obviously not one of those people you're instead doing a disingenuous selective critique.

This kind of urbanism is totally measurable: building heights, volumes, street and sidewalk widths and lengths, tree density and species, materials, remediations, etc. All non-arbitrary, all can be re-built intentionally, well-used, and improved. It only takes sufficient WILL!

New findings out of UCSF! Psilocybin was safely administered to people with Parkinson’s, and the results were remarkable. In addition to improved mood, participants also saw lasting gains in motor function and cognition, with no serious side effects. This is the first time a psychedelic has been tested in a neurodegenerative disease, and the outcomes are promising enough to launch a larger clinical trial, supported by the Michael J. Fox Foundation. A powerful reminder: nature holds deep potential to heal. ucsf.edu/news/2025/04/429906…
