Happy World Octopus Day! Cephalopods like octopus, squid, and cuttlefish have unique characteristics like color-changing skin, a beaked mouth, and a funnel for jet-propulsion. Here at the MBL, we study how these unique body parts form during development, from egg to hatchling.

This is terrible news. Jim has had such an impact in many fields, notably in supporting autism research thru the SFARI initiative, which is how so many of us met Jim and Marilyn. Deep condolences to his family and to all those at the Foundation, who will carry on.
It is with great sadness that the Simons Foundation announces the death of its co-founder and chair emeritus, James Harris Simons. Jim was an award-winning mathematician, a legendary investor and a generous philanthropist. simonsfoundation.org/2024/05…

Too bad for UCSC, but if there’s anyone to lead de-extinction while balancing cool science with ethical goals and public education, @bonesandbugs is the one!
🦤🦣 We are very excited for our Associate Director for Conservation Genomics, @bonesandbugs, who is taking a leave of absence from @ucsc to be the Chief Scientific Officer of @itiscolossal Shaprio has literally written the book on the science of de-extinction. We wish her luck!

Miss learning from Sydney! Always a pleasure and (almost) always right!
Science is like a game of chess; there's the opening-game, there's the middle game, and there's the end game. Sydney Brenner liked the opening game in science: to ask, what would it take to start a new field?

Total insanity. The system is simultaneously impressive and insane. It’s broken in its current form.

Is the problem: The price of the treatments? Lack of adequate health coverage? The need for pre- approval? Our failure to acknowledge overall system cost (lifetime medical costs for a sickle cell patient are well over $2 million)? The answer is… Yes. 😞

This is truly a miracle for people living with sickle cell. Unfortunately with a cost of over $2 million, it will be inaccessible for most. New technologies will continue exposing the financial and ethical faults in our health system. 🤷🏽‍♂️

Our Interim CEO, @Rich_Genomics spoke to Julia Vitarello and Dr Tim Yu about Mila's story and how they hope to help many more families access treatments for their children -- as they put it, from Mila to millions. @stopbatten Listen here: ow.ly/Ypeh50Qbrar

✅ Despite the benefits of #genetictesting, adoption of #universal #genetictesting for these pts has been low (~30%) ✅ This study was designed to evaluate the efficacy of implementing same day #genetictesting station (GTS) on the proportion of #ovariancancer #patients tested

Important point about returning clinically relevant results back to patients @EricTopol! For the @GeisingerRsrch MyCode cohort you mention, we now have exome sequence on ~20% (>175K) of our entire patient population and have reported results to >5,000 patient-participants!
What if knowledge that you were a carrier for gene variants could extend your life 3 to 7 years? erictopol.substack.com/p/whe…
