🚨 The NYPD has backed away from a $750,000 no-bid contract with Israeli surveillance firm Cognyte after New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani faced backlash over the deal, the New York Daily News reported.
The department confirmed it is restarting the procurement process and will accept competing bids for the technology, a cell-site simulator that mimics a cell tower to locate and track phones.
The three-year deal was for Cognyte's FalcoNet, an AI-driven tracker that can be mounted on police cars and drones or hidden in a backpack. Mamdani's office had said it was "reviewing the proposed contract."
The move reopens the contract to other bidders but doesn't drop the technology itself. Full story linked in reply.
⚡️ Mayor Zohran Mamdani's NYPD is poised to sign a three-year, $750,500 no-bid contract with Israeli surveillance firm Cognyte for FalcoNet, an AI-driven device that mimics a cell tower to track phones and can be mounted on police cars and drones or hidden in a backpack, the New York Daily News reported.
Cognyte won a tender to sell intercept spyware to Myanmar's state telecom weeks before the 2021 military coup, Reuters previously reported. Meta banned the firm the same year, saying its customers used fake accounts to target journalists and politicians in Kenya, Mexico and Indonesia.
The firm is part of an Israeli surveillance industry that grew big as a result of the military's monitoring of Palestinians, whose phone calls Israel's Unit 8200 has intercepted and stored by the millions, including to carry out genocide in Gaza and enforce a brutal illegal occupation in Jerusalem and the West Bank.

Regardless of which war criminal becomes prime minister, Palestinians living under Israeli apartheid will continue to face genocide, land theft, and erasure.
We cannot accept lies, excuses, or half-measures from our leaders. We must impose a full arms embargo and sanctions until Palestine is free.

The data to me says that if anything the issue of Israel is helpful to El-Sayed in Michigan.
He does better among voters who say it's extremely impt to their vote than overall.
Most Mich voters & indies want military aid ended or reduced to Israel.
AIPAC is deeply unpopular.
I don’t understand when he sleeps.

Emmy Liss, the director of New York City's child care office, was asked about lessons for other cities. She says you can't "fund it a little bit" and have to "lean all the way in. Child care when done well is expensive. You have to meaningfully invest in it."

Interesting panel with Leila Bozorg, Samuel Levine, Emmy Liss and Errol Schweizer on affordability. Liss says the city had to move quickly on 2-K while there was political momentum and will address "systemic issues as we grow," like worker wages and supporting family providers.

Volunteers, including Dr. Alan Gordon of NJ-11, traveled thousands of miles to help Palestinians harvest olives, and Israeli forces detained them for it. I will continue to demand an end to settler violence and the illegal occupation of Palestinian land, backed by Netanyahu.

“It would be really reasonable for him to expect clear commitments from the governor, including a new commitment on new taxes for the rich,” said Brooklyn state Sen. Julia Salazar.
In the final days of the gubernatorial race, Kathy Hochul is turning to the Democratic Party’s disparate wings, including Zohran Mamdani and Hakeem Jeffries, to help push her campaign over the finish line.

AOC on what she meant by ‘Woke 1.0’:
“What I was referring to, even in the context of that interview, was how we make the progressive movement one that isn’t rooted in judgment, castigation, or being closed off. To me, it’s about pivoting: fighting for the same things and not changing our principles, but doing so in a way that welcomes people, including those who perhaps weren’t always exposed to or educated about some of these issues and fights.”
