Twenty-five years ago today, Gregory Coupet did something that was unlike anything any goalkeeper had ever done before or has done since. For @TheAthleticFC, I spoke to him, Rivaldo and Claudio Cacapa about their roles in football’s greatest double save nytimes.com/athletic/7674046…

If Jorge Jesus ends up being remembered as the man that ended Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal career, that would do him a colossal disservice. For all the scrutiny after Ronaldo's walkout on his national team, their head coach has built his reputation on refusing to bend for anyone. A small part of him might even be enjoying the chaos. @jacklang profiles the veteran manager that once called himself "the best coach in the world". 🔗 nyti.ms/46YBrLW

It was a seemingly innocuous email, sent on a Wednesday morning in January 2017, that started everything. Arriving in the inbox of a senior official at Manchester City, it appeared to have been sent by an employee from European football’s governing body, UEFA, and contained a link to a financial compliance report. The City official clicked the download button. That was all it took. It was not a genuine email from UEFA but a successful phishing attempt by Portuguese hacker and activist Rui Pinto. City’s servers were breached, allowing Pinto to retrieve thousands of emails and documents from the club’s systems. This week, almost 10 years on from Pinto’s first email, the Premier League announced that an independent panel had found City guilty of all but one of the charges against them, as The Athletic first revealed last Friday. 📝 @jwhitey98: nyti.ms/4z5sgoL

What a night at the Azteca. Could barely keep track of the drama. It was also valedictory. The World Cup now loses its dislocated heart. This occasion was one final explosion, a proper game in a proper stadium. It showed us what we could have had nytimes.com/athletic/7424898…

“That was my catchphrase, my mentality: ’I’m the best, I’m one of a kind…” Jorge Campos is not wrong. He was a surfer, designed his own kits and was a formidable striker - despite being Mexico’s most legendary goalkeeper. He tells @jacklang about his extraordinary career. 🔗 nytimes.com/athletic/7421677…

"I used to tell people that I was one of a kind. That was my catchphrase, my mentality." Spoke to Jorge Campos about his 22-goal season as a striker, starting games in goal & ending them up front, surfing and – yes – the secrets of kit design. What a guy nytimes.com/athletic/7421677…

Did I go to an art supply shop on the morning of the interview, buy a load of felt tips and ask him to design a kit? Reader, I did

L'arbitre du match Paraguay-France a écopé de la pire note possible dans notre journal. Il est totalement passé à côté de son match ne donnant aucun carton aux joueurs du Paraguay. ➡️ l.lequipe.fr/bcb

FIFA considered rescheduling England’s World Cup round-of-16 game against Mexico at the Estadio Azteca primarily because of concerns raised around the safety of supporters, with weather an additional, but not key, driver of the talks, The Athletic can reveal. Sunday’s match will start as originally planned, at 6pm local time (8pm ET; 1am Monday BST), but only after emergency discussions were held over bringing it forward by six hours.
