Latinos in this country want what most people want... to belong, to build a better life and give their children opportunities they never had. They do not want to be harassed, deported or devalued. And neither party seems particularly good at understanding that, which is mad! Whichever party does will most liklely benefit the most. newyorker.com/news/the-lede/…

When video games become more powerful than patriotism, you know capitalism has gotten out of hand.
New from @CBSNews: Some U.S. military members who are itching to play a video game they've anticipated for more than a decade can trade a commitment for several more years of their life in uniform for a few days off to play Grand Theft Auto VI. As an incentive to reenlist, a U.S. Army unit in Georgia is offering active duty soldiers a four-day pass to play the popular game when it's released this fall, U.S. officials told us. @ellee_watson @JimLaPorta and me cbsnews.com/news/grand-theft…

Matthew McConaughey says acting in "The Wedding Planner" with Jennifer Lopez saved him from being searched at the U.S.-Mexico border during a "major mess-up." “I pull in one late night crossing the border going way down south. I get pulled over, and it’s one of those pull overs. They noticed me and I’m the gringo in the truck. I’m like, ‘Oh jeez. Get the wallet out. Here we go.’ It was going down and then I brought up, ‘Do you guys know Jennifer Lopez? Ever see ‘The Wedding Planner’? Yeah, that was me.’ They all went off… we ended up taking pictures together and they let me go.” (via Happy Sad Confused). variety.com/2026/film/news/m…

I’m proud to see my last name in this post. 😂
“The Daily Show” has released a slew of never-before-seen audition tapes from past and present correspondents, including John Oliver, Michael Che and more, in a 10-minute compilation posted to YouTube. A fresh-faced Oliver, who joined “The Daily Show” in 2006, is seen joking around with Stewart before the audition starts. “Now, if you do come work for us, you know you can’t use the name John,” Stewart tells Oliver, who quips back, “That’s fine. I’m prepared for that. I was going to take ‘Rico.'” variety.com/2026/tv/news/the…

Art has no language. Artists have no rules. So many #Latino artists were forced for decades to sing in English to make it in America. Karol G conquered America in #Spanish. Love that she is now choosing English for "Still" because she feels it, not because she has to. American cultural consumption is changing from a monolingual state to a polylingual one (Spanish, Korean, etc). And we're so better for it!
Karol G reveals her collaboration with Bruno Mars, 'Still,' will be entirely in English: “I’ve always been open to making music in other languages, without pressure, if it flows in an organic way. This song found me… Thank you, Bruno Mars for the magic of this song and for feeling it with me. You’re incredible.”

Two men are the frontrunners to replace Don Garber as MLS commissioner, and the choice tells you what the league thinks it needs. Larry Berg — LAFC co-owner, runs the committee behind MLS's roster rules and calendar, and 30 years at private-equity firm Apollo. The insider. David Nathanson — the media guy. Ran Fox's World Cup rights bids, part-owns the Sounders. The broadcaster. Berg means MLS thinks its problem is structure. Nathanson means it thinks the problem is eyeballs. With the Apple deal ending in 2029, that's a real fork in the road.

John Leguizamo says the money he's made from the "Ice Age" movies made it possible to send his children to college and buy a second home. “‘Ice Age’ allowed me to be as funny as I want to be. I got to be hilarious and so silly and create this incredible character and creature. It paid my bills, so I could be a theater actor. Now we got the sixth coming up. The longest-running animated movie franchise in the history of animated movies. It paid my bills. It got me a second and a triple home. It paid for my kids’ college.” variety.com/2026/film/news/j…

If I were the WB/DC marketing dept., I would have done a #SUPERGIRL × #FEARLESSGIRL crossover. A young bronze girl staring down power defiantly in front of Wall Street, symbolizing fearlessness, courage, and strength. You put the cape and suit on her and the whole marketing campaign writes itself. Just the American symbolism of the photo, and the social media photo ops alone, would’ve been free organic advertising for the film. The fact that this wasn’t done was a missed opportunity.

Here’s Grok 4.5’s "original draft" of Ellison's memo. Peak trolling 😆: "PARAMOUNT INTERNAL MEMO (DRAFT) From the Desk of David Ellison, Chairman & CEO Team, I know half the country is suing us and the deal is completely fucked right now, and I recognize that phrases like “indefinitely paused” and “multi-state antitrust lawsuit” are creating straight-up panic and uncertainty. So I’m writing this memo to manage the damage. Here’s the real recap: Over the past several months we spent a fortune on lawyers trying to get as many countries as possible to rubber-stamp this thing. 65 of them said yes or looked the other way. We’re going to keep shouting about those 65 clearances while pretending the ones that actually matter (California and the other AGs) don’t exist. We’re also going to keep insisting this merger is “pro-competitive” and will “create more opportunities for creators,” even though the actual creators (the WGA) are currently in court trying to stop us from doing it. The real goal is scale, leverage, and owning more of the industry. Everything else is marketing. If those annoying attorneys general and the Writers Guild hadn’t sued us, we would have closed this deal in the next couple weeks and started the real work of cutting costs and consolidating power. Instead we’re stuck. Let me be clear: we are pretending to be highly confident because saying anything else would tank morale and the stock. We still plan to force this merger through one way or another. We just agreed to skip the preliminary injunction hearing on August 3 because we were probably going to lose it. So we’re dragging this into a full trial instead and calling it a smart strategic decision. This week we’ll negotiate trial dates and hope the calendar somehow saves us. Until further notice the deal remains paused. Keep planning the integration, but slower, and try not to look too eager while the courts decide our fate. Tony from the Integration Management Office will be in touch with the people who still have to pretend this is happening on schedule. I know this is stressful as hell. Thanks for staying quiet and continuing to work while we figure out how badly we’re screwed. For now it’s “business as usual,” which means keep showing up and don’t ask too many questions. Paramount and WBD are still separate companies (for the moment), and we’re going to keep saying the last year was a huge success because of all of you, because that’s what these memos always say. We will continue to be “transparent,” which means you’ll only hear from us when the lawyers have scrubbed every sentence and we have no choice. Until then, keep telling yourselves (and anyone who asks) that this deal is great for consumers, creators, and the industry. Thanks for putting up with this mess. Enjoy your summer while you can. We’ll see what the courts leave us with. Let’s go. (We have no other choice.) David"
Paramount CEO David Ellison emails the company to tell them the deal is on hold. “Let’s go!”
