I write about how the consumption of tapioca provided interesting insights about poverty in 1970s Kerala, and its connections to what we now proudly call the Kerala model of development.

Love these guys for challenging the Liberal/RW anti marxist discourse of Viswanathanan, Essence etc based on strawmans and false reductios.
There is a real need to challenge and claim back these "intellectual" spaces from the blinded anti communists.

The Preface to the Critique of Political Economy is just incredible. In a mere 3 paragraphs, Marx defines the single most powerful mode of analysis ever devised in human history. No word is wasted, no sentence unclear, no concept half baked. It's a work of art.

There is no “objective” assumption in economics. You can either make assumptions based on the statu quo and describe them as a product of the “natural forces of markets” (which is a lie), or you can describe them as a political choice. Heterodox economists are doing the second.

Peter Thomas, the Marxist theorist best known for his work on Antonio Gramsci, has died.
He restored the political edge to Gramsci’s theory of hegemony and saw his own scholarship as part of the Left’s fight for power. jacobin.com/2026/10/peter-th…

Sure. But there are normative ideas underpinning mainstream (& heterodox) theories. A rigorous inquiry also needs to question that. Empirical economics, while helping, unfortunately, isn’t free from that bias either. Here is a piece I wrote on this:

Knausgård said it couldn't be translated. Somebody had to try, anyway! My translation of Thure Erik Lund’s sprawling, unholy mess of a novel is upon us. Thanks to Thure Erik Lund, NORLA, @andothertweets, @nordicnovellas and so many others for paving the way.
