I think the fundamental YIMBY insight is that, if you live in a society which imposes artificial scarcity on basic necessities like housing and health care, then there is no amount of redistribution which will make them broadly available to the poor. You need supply-side changes.

Detached homes, not purpose-built rentals, are the most financialized asset in the country. Its increible how much of the political and finanical system depends on home values of this very particular asset never falling. Just look at all the policies we put in place - from banking to zoning to taxes - to ensure it doesn't. REITs and PBR don't have a similar backstop. Also ask yourself who REITs are buying purpose-built rental buildings from, something the G&M article glosses over. It isn't some benevolent owner. It's from someone who wanted to make a profit. All that's happening now is that the profit is being split from one or a few owners to many.
There's a strain of "Make Canada Great Again" on the left, who believe there was some golden age without housing speculation and we just need to return to it. It's ahistorical nonsense. 110 years ago, there were ads encouraging land speculation in my neighbourhood.

The main YIMBY argument is that the housing crisis is caused by restrictive zoning in *high income areas* of cities, and that displacement is due to it being illegal to build in those neighborhoods. The ur purpose of zoning in America is making income restricted neighborhoods.
YIMBY’s be like” we need to rapidly displace all low income and people of color from the city so we can replace their homes with new homes they can’t afford”

I'd have an easier time believing those who use "neighbourhood character" or tree removal, infrastructure concerns, affordability etc... to argue against/ block gentle density increases IF they weren't silent when a 1600 sqft home on a tree filled lot is replaced by a single 6000(!) sqft single family home that just sold for $4.2 million. In the past decade 100s of 60+ year old homes have been replaced 1 for 1 with MUCH larger homes that make the neighbourhood they're in less affordable, and more exclusive. Those homes are locked away for another 60+ years and every passing year we do nothing we lose more opportunities to add housing to neighbourhoods that are losing people. We should aspire for our neighbourhoods to be places where young families can grow; where seniors can downsize and stay in their community; where nurses, teachers, and the service workers we rely on can afford to live near their work; where kids can walk or roll to school and to their friend's house; where we know our neighbours by their names not simply by the car they drive. That's neighbourhood character I think is worth fighting for.

Anti-growth, Anti-property rights, Anti-freedom, Anti-young people What a disgraceful philosophy for Smith to embrace build housing, build a future for young families
High density infill needs common sense consideration for parking, waste collection, water and utilities, and the surrounding neighbourhood. Edmonton families asked for help. Our government stepped in because people had run out of places to turn. Municipal Affairs Minister @DanWilliamsAB explains it best👇

Oldest NIMBY fallacy in the book: when a teardown bungalow sells for $1.5M and is replaced with $2M duplexes, affordability has worsened. But the alternative was a $3M mansion.

Replying to @ABDanielleSmith
Your poster example is within walking distance of a new train station. How are we supposed to build transit oriented development if we can’t build a townhouse within 600 metres of a train?

Dear @jesseforyeg, The "public hearing" you talk about was actually an emergency meeting. You would have been asked to leave during the In Camera portion of the proceedings. Either you don't know the difference or you are just misleading people. Which is it? #yegcc #yeg
Dear @CityofEdmonton: The “public” hearing today, where you didn’t let the public speak, made it private half the time, and kicked us all out, could have been an email. Regards, A Taxpayer

Still crickets from the province on this, despite two requests to their press secretaries and appealing to Rob directly.
Hey Rob, Can you please show your receipts on the claim that "municipal infill policies have greatly devalued hundreds of properties over the last several years" ? You may be right, but I'd like to see evidence, since Edm assessment data doesn't seem to show this. #ableg #yeg

Edmonton City Council is being forced to break the law. Danielle Smith wants a public hearing, and she also wants to dictate how council votes at that hearing. But council must enter public hearings with an open mind. Once again, the UCP just has not thought anything through

Is it too much to ask for publishers of articles advocating for cycling routes on secondary roads in Toronto to require their authors to submit a proposed alternative? @RDiManno, is this the sort of secondary route you're thinking as an alternative to the Yonge Street lanes?

Latest by me. Spoiler: A detached home doesn't matter, but... adequate green space where a child can play independently does.
