So many damn CEOs going on and on about software engineers are gonna lose their jobs to AI... Dude, I WISH AI kills software engineering because that's the day I build companies putting all these CEOs out of their jobs! Bring on the AGI!

University degrees are valuable only to the extent that others think is valuable. Then the best gauge is AB test in different disciplines (sw, physics, humanities, business etc) with some weight on each. Let universities duke it out 1v1 Calculate elo Rank them
All university rankings are very flawed. I wondered how we could rank unis as purely as possible? So I looked at the career path of ~100,000 engineers over 10yrs. Universities rank high when its graduates work at companies, ranked PageRank style, that engineers compete harder to join. Stanford, MIT, Harvard were top 3, but the extent they were above the rest surprised me. Brown at #6, Waterloo at #7!

We need to generate 1000x power so we can transfer 500x power to data centers so we can generate 100x more tokens available so tokens become 50x cheaper so openai and Anthropic 10x revenue So their profit 5x And stocks go to the moon We get rich And we can use ultra mode for $5 bucks a month on every IOT devices and laptops 24/7

I realized that not even ML engineers are safe from AI. At work, I just optimized a ML model for the search path and data ingestion path. Each step uses text and image embeddings. This optimization will save our company hundreds of thousands of dollars in cloud GPU costs! And I did this with Claude alone as a mere SWE. Sure, there are topics in ML still impenetrable by AI alone, but how long will that be the case? In 2026, we saw coding die. I think in 2027, we will see ML as a specialty die.

But, I am an American, and I want RSI. How about this. If you don't like guns, you don't have to buy one. If you don't like abortions, you don't have to get one. And if you don't like RSI, tbh I'm not even sure what that is. Like using a computer to build a computer?

I’m all for championing excellence over mediocrity, but it is a mistake to imply that academic achievement is the only measure of it. Jocks and prom queens aren’t the antithesis of merit and striving, and in some ways, their arenas are more “real” than academic curriculums. Fight passivity and low standards!

Stoicism is fake. I disagree that it'll help you cope with reality. Joy of doing what you love. Anger against betrayal. Happiness of witnessing your child's first step. Sadness of letting go of your grandparents. You feel this because you are alive and you are meant to feel it. Descartes should've started with "I feel, therefore I am". Long before cognition came pain and fear coming into this world. Keep it in check, but don't let go of it.
You must remember that all philosophy is a confession. People become obsessed with stoicism because they are naturally neurotic. That doesn’t mean stoicism can’t help you. If you are neurotic, it will help you a lot. Marcus Aurelius was neurotic. But it does mean you need to update your mental model of “this stoic guru will be stoic” to “this stoic guru will be neurotic.” Thinking the DailyStoic guy must be mentally stable is like thinking someone on anti-depressants must not be depressed.

Just last year, around this time, I was still mucking around with Intellij. Now this seems unthinkable. Being a software engineer in 2027 is gonna be wild.

This post is taken from internal Microsoft Blind board. Even the exceptional performers are offered to take this deal. Layoff is coming for all! It doesn't matter how you perform at work.
BREAKING: Microsoft, $MSFT, is offering buyouts to 60,000 workers as part of the company’s efforts to cut costs amid AI adoption, per Bloomberg. Personnel on select teams in the US, Canada, India, and the UK at a vice president level and below will be eligible. This reflects ~27% of Microsoft's total workforce.

If you are a software engineer who has previously been reluctant to change jobs because you were worried about the difficulty of onboarding in a new environment, you should reconsider because this is a golden age to switch jobs right now. Even if you have an unsupportive team or even an unsupportive manager, they will not be able to stop you from learning about the work and the business. You can always dig into the impenetrable code that is written in a garbage way. AI will parse it for you. Make it look understandable. Draw diagrams and even create personalized lectures and podcast episodes dedicated to helping you learn in the way you need to learn. If you're stuck in a crappy job, the time to switch is now; go ahead, interview, and get a new job.

Of course, it's the pesky social media bringing scrutiny that's the problem.

Let's for a moment recognize that running "npm install" in 2016 was harder than solving unsolvable math problems with GPT-6 Astra.

Sonnet 5.5 is an incredible model. The balance of accuracy, speed, cost is better than anything I've used and I use all kinds of models and harnesses. We often talk up the absolute frontier models but these midtier models are now so good that you probably should use them more.

Do you want your engineers to win? You need two kinds of engineering leaders in your team. One that prioritizes quality, and another that prioritizes delivery. When you have these two in a good relationship but still in a healthy competition with one another, that's how you have a high-throughput engineering team.

Spiders and I have a pact at my house. As long as you stay in the corners of the rooms where I don't have to see you, you get to stay. Once you start intruding in my space, you get squashed.
