‼️‼️ Now this is something! 🔽 This technical thread suggests (explains) that the entire Starlink/shield slowdown issue is not a consequence of a political decision in the US or by Musk but the result of Ukrainian engineers hacking the system to bypass it's controls and do something they are not permitted to do - and when Starlink took steps to prevent the bypassing and ensure the controls remained effective, suddenly the system stopped working in 'bypass mode' - and Zelensky then set out to politicise matters. The explanation makes the bits of the puzzle fit together and fits with the New York Times article in which Ukrainians explained that although the system is formally limited to 100 mph they have managed to exceed it.
~~~~
"What was really going on with the Starlink scandal in Ukraine? An analysis of the technical modifications, hacker boards, Elon Musk’s restrictions, and why drones started falling at the end of 2026 and Zelensky staged a pre-election Trump scandal. Big thread 👇 1/15
Let’s start with the tariffs. Inside the country, only civilian Starlink has always worked: the basic tariff ($100), commercial in-motion ($400), and priority headquarters ($2–4k). Aviation tariffs cost up to $1K–20K–100K+, but they are unavailable in the country. 2/15
Because of the high load, the network was overloaded. SpaceX had to keep prices high for the military in order to build an excess of ground stations around Ukraine for minimal signal latency. By the way, these sites with antenna domes recently began to be burned on orders from the darknet. 3/15
The main problem at the front is electronic warfare (EW). Because of GPS jamming, civilian Starlink chips froze, and with false location the terminal was blocked. The solution was a GPS hack board. Engineers soldered it inside to manually set the required coordinates. 4/15
The hack boards also allowed bypassing Musk’s geographic zones. For a long time Starlink did not work in the gray zone under Russian control. But if you entered the coordinates of a neighboring region of Ukraine, the connection came back to life. The Russians used this too, until Kyiv received exclusive whitelists. 5/15
By 2025 Musk began tightening the screws and lowering speed limits for commercial tariffs. But military engineers discovered a loophole: technically the satellite-terminal communication session is not rigidly tied to GPS. The protection was only on the terminal module itself. 6/15
If the terminal thought via the hack board that it was static, it itself sent a radio request to the satellite and received the necessary data for the session. There are already about 10,000 satellites, and the signal was picked up even with a spread of 150+ km. The drone was flying, but the Starlink server considered it stationary. 7/15
This was a shared secret. Before being sent to the front, the cases of new Starlinks were massively opened in order to solder in the GPS hack and install durable moisture-proof connectors. This way the ordinary tariff allowed drones to fly at high speeds. 8/15
At the beginning of 2026 Musk lowered the speed of the commercial tariff to 160 km/h across the entire planet. This is below the speed of many simple UAVs with a tailwind. But because of the mass use of hack boards in Ukraine, no one noticed this. The terminals reported that they were supposedly standing still. 9/15
At the END of 2026 SpaceX responded harshly. A server-side check was introduced: if according to GPS the terminal is stationary, but at the same time it switches from satellite to satellite too quickly (which reveals a real speed above 160 km/h), the server instantly drops the session. 10/15
The GPS hack stopped working. Ukrainian military began having problems with long-range UAVs. Now flights must be strictly planned so as not to exceed the 160 km/h limit. There is not always money for aviation tariffs, and SpaceX does not sell them because of the attacking nature of the use. 11/15
Against this background Zelensky is trying to get access to StarShield (the US military Starlink) without restrictions in order to fly over the Russian Federation. But Trump, Musk, and the Pentagon refuse him. The Ukrainians presented the restrictions as a political blockade, remaining silent about the fact that the Starlink speed limit has already been in place for a year. 12/15
Now there is behind-the-scenes ping-pong: Musk says that he changed nothing these days, Rubio states that StarShield is unavailable to Ukraine. The bottom line: Starlink is gradually being squeezed into the framework of cars and stationary use. Bypassing the system no longer works. 13/15
Whether the speed check was turned off or access was given to special aviation tariffs is still unclear. The failure affected a narrow segment of drones. However, satellite communication on super-high-speed drones was already a compromise because of the signal delays of 1000 km to orbit and back. 14/15
Russian UAV specialists are in no hurry to rejoice. The simplicity of using Starlink slowed down the development of other technologies in Ukraine. Now Kyiv can, on an emergency priority basis, refine more complex autonomous mesh-AI systems that will fly deep into the Russian Federation. End of thread. 15/15
Written based on materials from last year’s newspapers, most likely not true and total nonsense. No one and nothing is right on the internet. Author — a boring schoolboy from Georgia."
为什么我认为,今天的欧洲,本质上就是一个穿着高定西装、端着红酒杯的福利版大清。
如果把19世纪的晚清和如今的欧洲放在一起对比刨析,你会发现这两者的病灶、心态和衰弱的剧本都一模一样。
何出此言,论据如下:
其一,欧洲把道德与合规当成天朝礼法,把中美科技看作奇技淫巧
当年乾隆和晚清士大夫面对英国的蒸汽机、火车和洋枪洋炮,第一反应不是恐慌,而是居高临下的道德鄙视,认为那是毫无教化的奇技淫巧,只有大清的孔孟礼治才是人类文明的最高形态。
今天的欧洲老爷看中美,心态一模一样。
他们打心底里瞧不起硅谷的野蛮生长的科技新贵,更瞧不起中国没日没夜卷出来的超级供应链。
在欧洲老爷们眼里,中美这是没有灵魂的野蛮内卷,只有欧洲高举的环保主义、数据隐私、多元平权和每周35小时工作制,才是人类文明的天朝礼法。
他们沉溺在道德审美上的优越感里,用文明裁判的姿态掩盖自己在生产力上的全面阳痿。
其二,欧洲的奢侈品和燃油车,就是当代的茶叶、丝绸与瓷器
大清曾经靠着农业文明攒下的极致老底,茶叶、丝绸、瓷器,赚走了全球大量的白银,甚至狂妄地认为外国人不喝大清的茶叶就会便秘而死。
欧洲过去几十年吃的老本,本质上就是工业2.0时代攒下的茶叶和瓷器,包括法国的LV与爱马仕、德国的BBA燃油车与精密阀门、瑞士的手表与医药。
欧洲人同样产生了一种致命的幻觉:
认为无论科技怎么改变,中美的新贵们永远得排队买欧洲的皮包和机械,欧洲永远可以靠着祖传的品牌溢价和专利护城河,躺着收割全世界的财富。
直到中国出现的新能源车直接打穿德国汽车工业的底裤、AI 的兴起开始重构工业软件与研发范式,欧洲才惊觉自己的丝绸瓷器不再是不可替代的硬通货了。
其三,布鲁塞尔的罚单经济,就是当年的广州十三行
大清闭关锁国,但又馋洋人的白银,怎么办?
搞出了一套广州十三行体制:
自己不搞工业、不搞航海,就在通商口岸设卡,制定最繁琐的规矩,向外国商人征收高昂的规礼银和买路钱。
今天欧盟总部的布鲁塞尔,正是数字时代的广州十三行。
自己孵化不出OpenAI、英伟达、字节跳动,就写全世界最厚的《AI法案》和《数字市场法案》。
你美国科技巨头想进欧洲4.5亿人的市场?
可以,先按我的规矩交几十亿欧元的反垄断罚单。
用行政设卡和司法敲诈来代替产业竞争,结果把真正的创新者全挡在门外,把自己彻底锁死在旧时代。
其四,从入关八旗退化成提笼架鸟的铁杆庄稼
满清八旗刚入关时(对应欧洲的大航海和早期工业革命),那也是敢拼命、敢流血的凶悍战力。
但承平日久,八旗子弟拿上了国家包养的铁杆庄稼(世袭俸禄),迅速退化成只会提笼架鸟、抽大烟、听戏的寄生阶层。
到了晚清财政破产,朝廷哪怕敢克扣一点点旗饷,八旗兵不打洋人,先在京城闹事。
今天欧洲的高福利选民,就是当代的八旗子弟。
二战后几代人吃尽了工业霸权的红利,把高福利、长休假、终身不解雇当成了天经地义的铁杆庄稼。
现在老本吃光了,法国国债飙到GDP的120%,政府刚想砍610亿欧元预算自救,这群平时连班都不愿多加的当代旗人立刻冲上街头,把143年历史的市政厅烧成灰烬。
其五,既得利益死保风水,把每一次洋务运动扼杀在摇篮里
晚清不是没有明白人,李鸿章、曾国藩也想搞洋务运动,也想修铁路、架电线。
但为什么搞不成?
因为朝堂上的清流派御史、地方上的乡绅和漕运利益集团百般阻挠:
说修铁路会惊动祖宗龙脉、破坏风水,买机器会夺了纤夫的饭碗,最后连修好的淞沪铁路都能被清廷买回来亲手拆掉扔进海里。
当一个帝国把祖宗留下的存量当成永恒,把既得利益的枷锁当成道德皇冠,它的结局在两百年前的紫禁城就已经写好了。
A plot of shares for every man. The Jeffersonian solution.
Trump Accounts are about AI and Capitalism
Tech leaders like Elon and Sam Altman are worried the at the younger generation feels no stake in an AI economy. They cannot continue to build if millennials will try to blow everything up over housing prices
UBI is not a solution. UBI is welfare. UBI is at odds with technocapitalism because the only way to increase welfare is to increase taxes on productive companies
Trump Accounts give young Americans a stake in the economy itself. Their wealth grows as tech companies grow. Tech companies want to create a class of American invested in tech’s success
Trump has also been having the government buy large stakes in companies like Intel and Nvidia. It serves the same purpose.
We actually really do need a new slur for black people that’s only for when they’re just being kind of annoying, the n word feels too harsh for just being loud on the train or something
I’m sharing this again because it’s one of the most sobering and disturbing things I’ve read here.
The WSJ starting to admit the obvious: Western democracy when combined with fiscally negative immigration and a generous welfare state, inexorably creates a solvency crisis. (they didn't mention the immigration part but it's an essential ingredient in the toxic mix)
their words are unusually stark:
> It’s also a litmus test of a pressing question facing the West: Is it possible for political leaders to rein in spending on ever expanding welfare states? So far, the answer seems to be no, increasing the chances that countries like Britain are inching toward a financial reckoning.
the welfare state + open borders model is a clear democracy failure mode and there's no obvious way out. no western European nation will reform pensions or entitlements. they are actually fundamentally incapable of doing what must be done. (the immigration aspect is virtual corollary to democracy because it creates incentives for the left to import reliable voters, so at least part of the time immigration is virtually unfettered.)
the UK, with maximum, unending immigration, an aging and shrinking workforce, a tiny and overexploited base of taxpayer paypigs, highly financialized service / financial industry, a legacy of welfare as political payoffs to disenfranchised groups, an inability to cut pensions, and a stagnant, is the poster child for this disease and the worst affected but by no means the only nation in this predicament.
the UK's grim fiscal state is the future of every western nation, unless something changes dramatically.
aging population + increasingly discouraged working-age adults + highly mobile capital & elites that simply leave under onerous tax regimes + mass and unending fiscally negative immigration + expensive decarbonization and deindustralization + a left wing that is totally committed to immigration, over all else + a total inability to cut entitlements = fiscal crisis and eventual default
in the end, the wealthy and the entrepreneur class that actually power growth will simply leave to escape the tightening tax noose. the government will become increasingly reliant on the middle/upper middle professional classes who lack the ability to leave, completely eliminating any motive to be entrepreneurial or take risks. the economy will become increasingly torpid as dynamism vanishes. the left will continue to gain power due to slow electoral build of immigration and will continue to honor their side of the deal, which is neverending handouts to fiscally useless electoral client groups.
case studies like south africa, venezuela and lebanon show us that life can get worse, and worse, and worse, and worse and worse. things getting extremely bad are not a guarantee that they won't continue to get worse. don't be fooled by anticipating a sudden realization among political elites that they have employed the wrong formula. things can just get steadily worse for decades and decades with no escaping the slide.
if I had to guess, I would venture that if no MAJOR (and I'm talking _major_) political reform occurs in western Europe, the continent will enter a sovereign debt crisis in the coming decade, standards of living will collapse, life expectancy will collapse, entitlements will be ravaged. I anticipate something akin to the effect that the collapse of the Soviet Union had on the local population, or worse. politics will be polarized between the ultraright and far left, each with their own radical solution to the problem (extirpating immigrants, versus actual socialism). I don't know which of the two will prevail. neither the right nor the left is willing to reform entitlements, which is the biggest problem, and so the market will do it for them. the US may escape their fate, but I am not particularly optimistic it will. our demographics and willingness to do hard things (on immigration, eg) are marginally better, but our spending and fraud-based entitlement economy is almost just as bad. no major party will even contemplate uttering that boomer luxury communism must end eventually. it's not even a topic in the midterms nor will it be in '28.
the productivity boost from AI might grant European nations a slight reprieve in the medium term, but it wont salvage their bleak fiscal situation in the end. this is because almost no European nation controls the industrial inputs to AI (beyond ASML), so their gain is limited to the productivity uplift from deployment of the technology, while they remain vassals to the nations which actually control the deeper stack. moreover, a GDP and tax revenue boost from AI can easily be outspent. these nations have a spending problem, not a revenue problem. they can always dream up utterly farcical new handout schemes, like the UK's "motability". additionally, while AI creates a legion of highly productive entrepreneurs, they will all tax optimize and the benefits of new firms will largely not be captured by their respective governments. capital and startups are more portable than they have ever been. AI simply accelerates the pareto-ization of the economy whereby a shrinking minority of founders produces more value whilst more and more are idle and depend on handouts from the productive few. however, capital and human capital mobility destroys this fragile arrangement and strips the idle many of their benefactors. AI buys Western Europe at most a few years of delay to the inevitable crisis.
You know what's a great intelligence tell?
When someone confuses semantic issues with substantive ones.
If someone starts disagreeing over wording for something that's clearly-stated and correct as the words are used and intended, then they're probably not worth talking to.
Here is my best guess what happened since January 2025:
1. Trump gets into office and makes Ukraine peace a top priority
2. Calls Putin and agrees on the basic outlines of a peace deal
3. Zelensky starts to play games with Trump and activates the EU "leaders".
4. Merz, Macron, Starmer and Ursula get excited and think "now we can play Trump".
5. They begin coordinating without Trump to escalate the war, including support for attacks inside Russia. They don't have a real strategy but follow their "petty little dictator" instincts.
6. Trump gets really pissed, but understands this is a serious situation and decides to not talk much about it. He also overextended himself bigly on Greenland, which was a mistake and created hard core resistance, especially with the Scandinavians.
7. Trump tones down the Greenland thing and negotiates behind the scenes with Denmark, which calms down the Scandies.
8. He then decides to play silent hardball against the EU: absolutely squeeze them on oil with Iran and sandwich them between Russia and the US, while also coordinating with Xi.
Effectively, the absolutely dumb behavior of EU leaders have made them effectively enemies of Trump. He viewed them as feckless and weak before; now, he added "malicious" to the list.
I do think Washington came to the conclusion that the EU leadership cannot be trusted at all, neither as partners nor as managers of Europe. The decision was made to absolutely crush and dismantle them.
Let's see what happens next, but the Ukraine war is probably over soon.
The AfD is likely going to take over Germany within the next 12-18 months with the help of CDU defectors, or a full-on coalition with the CDU as junior partner after the party cleanses itself from the Merz/Merkel loyalists.
This change will be driven by a dramatic and exponential decay of the German (and other European) economies in the next 6 months or so, with winter coming, Russian energy drying up for them and the US squeezing them to death.
This happens when you allow the most degenrate impulses in your society to elect a bunch of low IQ Karens to run the world's (formerly) most powerful economic block. "Muh Climate Change and Gender Equality" (in Sweden lol) wont't win you the war for energy and intelligence domination.
On an ironic footnote: It's kind of funny Europe is losing the age of intelligence because its leaders are so unintelligent.
To end on a positive note:
Europe still has (by far) the greatest human potential on earth. But while the rest of the world tries to optimize its "progress per potential", European leaders actively suppress, destroy and dilute their populations. Once this stops and reverses, a European golden age (and in extension, a golden age of the greater West from Sydney to Vancouver) will follow.
