Schemes were legal, this is the crux of the problem. Imagine getting planning permission for an extension only to be told years later that it wasn't allowed and that actually anyone who had your type of extension had to pay a levy. There'd be uproar and rightly so.
To quote a man who contacted me last week: " I constantly think of ways to end my life." The provider of the scheme had repeatedly told him it was legal. #loancharge

HMRC have just informed us via the medium of @FTMoney that apparently no-one that took out a post 2010 loan has any closed years.
Apparently the "D" in DOTAS did not stand for Disclosure.
Well, I'm glad the Finance Act 2020 "became clear" in April 2020.
