"These policies don’t just strengthen our economy and improve competitiveness; they support our ideas of who we are and what our relationship is with the government." @jmeyer01223 relays the historical impact the Tax Reform Act of 1986 has had and how it kickstarted the state flat tax revolution.

Billionaires: "We already moved out of California last year. It was because of this tax proposition you're trying to pass."
Zucman: "No you didn't, because my theoretical model and my amateur reading of tax law says you can't do that!"

You can debate the magnitude of people who move for tax reasons. But if you debate the existence you lose all credibility with me. I could easily name more than a dozen people I know who have moved from high-tax jurisdictions to low-tax jurisdictions to reduce their taxes.

Today we celebrate the 40th anniversary of President Ronald Reagan's Tax Reform Act of 1986. ALEC's @jmeyer01223 relays the historical impact this legislation has had and how it kickstarted the state flat tax revolution.

We do not assume the tax is annual. We estimate the revenue of the measure as written: a one-time wealth tax that could generate long-term income tax losses. We see 30% of the wealth tax base already eliminated pre-2026 and apply litigation-survival probability to the rest. 1/2 conference.nber.org/conf_pap…

The Hoover Institution, in a deceptive study, claimed the tax would end up costing more than it brings.
To reach that conclusion, the authors of the study assumed that the tax would become annual. Hence, on the cost side, some billionaires would leave California.
However, on the benefits side, if the tax becomes annual it would generate revenue annually.
But the Hoover economists did not take that into account.
You read that correctly: they assumed the tax would be annual, leading to some outflows, but that it would bring revenue only once.
This makes no sense – but usefully fuels the anti-tax ads. nitter.gq/gabriel_zucman/status/…

Uh-oh. The New Yorker has published an article that uses "reticence" to mean "reluctance." The New Yorker! We're finished.

"We are now seeing states around the country introduce the ALEC model resolution, calling the national debt a national security concern, and we hope to see much more attention brought to that issue as a result." ALEC President & Chief Economist @taxeconomist spoke with ALEC Tv at the ALEC Annual Meeting in Orlando!

A TV network invited me to do an interview on data center taxation and told me they were doing some Northern Virginia interviews, asking me to meet their crew in Ashburn. I expected a local studio, but the address is a data center construction site. I'm currently basking in the heat in my dark suit in Data Center Alley, waiting for this crew to arrive.
What often gets missed in discussions about the local impact of data centers is that they're frequently in locations like this, an industrial area in the shadow of the airport. No one is next to this unless they are actually visiting one of the facilities.

This post got hundreds of responses from economists and YIMBYs but nearly all of them are wrong about why its wrong
Even if YIMBY reforms failed to lower housing prices, or even if they _raised_ them, they would be an important gain to national welfare

Suggestion: all states should require that tax payments by "Data Centers" will go to reducing property taxes at the local level and income taxes at the state level.
Nothing for higher government spending.

Unpopular Opinion: Utahns (ranked 48th highest property tax state) have no idea how good we have it in comparison to the rest of the country.
The truth in taxation process is the reason Utah property taxes are so low.

As my good friend @Taxeconomist @ALEC_states points out, Missouri needs to do much more to keep up with no income tax, right to work, universal school choice Tennessee...which is absolutely crushing it when it comes to economic & population growth:
