Green card interviews exist to verify marriages, not to spring traps on the people who show up in good faith. Sweeping up the spouses of U.S. citizens who entered legally and have no criminal history does nothing to secure the border. It only shreds families and punishes people for trying to follow the rules. Nothing about that reflects strength. It reflects fear dressed up as policy.
If the administration’s goal were fairness, people would not be walking into scheduled appointments with their partners and walking out in handcuffs on technicalities that have sat dormant for years. The federal government should not be in the business of breaking American households to score political points. Every serious nation recognizes that family unity is a stabilizing force. Undermining it is reckless.
