I’ve had a lot of people comment saying they’ve had radioactive items confiscated in the mail. Chances are, it wasn’t packaged or labeled properly and perhaps their country just has different regulations.
In the U.S. though, you can legally ship and receive certain radioactive items through the mail. There are rules, but it’s not automatically illegal just because something is radioactive. The rules are covered under USPS Publication 52, Section 347 (“Radioactive Materials”), along with Packaging Instruction 7A and the applicable federal regulations under 49 CFR.
Generally, the item needs to be secured in an inner box with cushioning and then placed inside a sturdy outer box. It also needs to be properly labeled on the outside so that your mailman (or mail lady) knows to handle it with extra care, like the label on the box I’m showing in my picture.
Another important rule is that (for qualifying USPS shipments) the radiation level on the outside of the package cannot exceed 0.5 millirem per hour (mrem/h). You absolutely need to check measurements from the outside of the box before heading to your local post office.
Certain antiques and collectibles can qualify for exemptions, so understand that not EVERYTHING that’s radioactive has to go through this process or needs to be double boxed with outer labeling.
My point is that radioactive items aren’t automatically prohibited from being mailed, so don’t let people convince you otherwise. There are regulations you have to follow, sure (and you should) but it’s perfectly legal. ☢️
