Announcing Ikigai Grants: Microgrants give early-stage, bootstrapped talent capital. But that’s not enough. I’ve watched too many grantees become perpetual microgrant chasers, wasting time applying to one $5k grant after another. Worse, most programs encourage this by funding the blanket ā€œsmart people doing cool things,ā€ with no real conviction behind it. I wouldn’t be here without patronage from @tylercowen & @jposhaughnessy. But looking back, the mentors & community were worth much more than the money. So I built the program I always wished existed: - $50k total, avg. $5k check - Matched with mentors & community across @RenPhilanthropy , Fulcrum Science, and my personal network of founders, fund leads, investors & scientists. Cohort 1 backs emerging talent in areas I believe are deeply underfunded and undervalued. Every application is reviewed by me. Ikigai Grants is a program of @RenPhilanthropy, with support from Fulcrum Science. Advised by many wonderful friends & colleagues including: @AshleyNAbel @RaianyRomanni @NeuroStats Bonnie EJ Maven @idatin @ashleyz413 @JackScannell13 Apply by Nov 9th, 9a PST: alexaraki.xyz/ikigai

Our newest book is finally here! Making the Modern Laboratory is a spectacular 504-page hardcover that tells the story of everything in the research laboratory and how it came to be, from pipettes to heat-resistant glass to microscopes and more. It features dozens of articles (most of which will never appear in print), 100+ full-color images, and original writing from 36 authors. It's printed on Arena Natural Rough paper from Fedrigoni. These books are THICC and would make a great gift for both the science-curious and the working scientist. :) We have spent the last year working on this project. It has been an insane labor of love. The best way to support our independent science journalism is to buy a copy. <3 Pre-order for $49, with free shipping: press.asimov.com/articles/mo…

Today we launch NeuroRisk, the first embryo test for autism and schizophrenia that looks for mutations in evolutionarily important genes. These mutations are individually rare but over 10% of people carry at least one mutation in this class.

Today, Pioneer Labs is announcing our first step towards terraforming Mars. šŸš€šŸŒ¼ With equipment that fits in just a single rocket launch, we can convert Martian dirt, water, and air into enough building materials to construct a small city on Mars. To do it, we made the first microbe for Mars. We found the best microbe on Earth and used evolution to teach it how to source all of its nutrients directly from Martian materials. The first astronauts will be greeted with safe shelter already filled with water, oxygen, and rocket fuel for the return journey. This is the first step toward using biology to make Mars a friendly place for life. It lets us live off the land and helps us build the next great frontier. It's the first of five organisms we need to green Mars ā¬‡ļø

Today in @Nature, we report a new approach to studying human brain development and modeling disease in vivo. Human neural #assembloids and #organoids have opened new ways to study development in vitro, but they also have important limitations. Transplantation can provide a more physiological environment, yet human cortical cells then develop within a rodent brain that matures much faster, constraining their growth and integration. To address some of these limitations and obtain more advanced functional readouts relevant to disease biology, we generated #apallial mice, in which ~98% of the cortex and hippocampus fail to form, creating space for transplanted human cortical organoids to grow and integrate extensively. We call these #xenocortical mice (XCX). Nearly 7 years in the making. Congratulations to an extraordinary team and wonderful collaborators! Link to the article below šŸ‘‡

For the first time, scientists have mapped the complete brain and central nervous system of an adult male fruit fly — a key model organism in science. 🪰 Working alongside HHMI Janelia Research Campus and the scientific community, @GoogleResearch scientists and researchers used AI to combine millions of 2D images into 3D neural shapes, reconstructing a record-breaking 166,000+ neurons. This foundational map of the adult male fruit fly brain can help accelerate our understanding of the brain, and is a major milestone in neuroscience.

Forest Neurotech is now Arbor Neuroscience! I couldn't imagine a better scientist and leader than Flip Sabes (CEO, @PhilipSabes) to unlock the mysteries of brain stimulation with Arbor behind him. Congrats to Flip and @WhitneySGriggs. Massive props also to @Convergent_FROs (s/o @AGamick and @AdamMarblestone) for continuing to support the Arbor team as a Focused Research Organization/FRO!
Brain stimulation can work remarkably well for treating brain disease. But we can't predict who it helps, or say why it fails for everyone else. We're building the instruments, data, and models to make neuromodulation predictable. arborneuroscience.org/introd…

Convergent is one of the few places that can incubate organizations behind transformational science: - @E11BIO -- brain connectomics - @ForestNeurotech -- full brain API that became Merge Labs ($250M investment) - @leanprover -- formal mathematics Now it’s applying that model to AI resilience. Deeply needed.
We're hiring. Think: Sr partner at a venture incubator, but the outputs are Focused Research Organizations Form the thesis, find the founders, build the boards, launch the org AI resilience: bioresilience, cyber-physical systems, epistemic infrastructure, compute governance

New episode with @AdamMarblestone, CEO and co-founder of @Convergent_FROs. Adam is an extraordinary catalyst and accelerant for science: he has influenced or routed billions in funding, he helped start significant companies and scientific subfields, and he is the world’s go-to person for neuroscience roadmapping. This year, the NSF launched a $1.5B X-Labs initiative inspired by the FRO model Adam pioneered. Though he started with neuroscience, today he helps organize scientific endeavors across many fields, including AI, math, biology, climate, astrophysics, and more. Adam proposes that fields like neurotech, whole-brain emulation, cryo, and nanotech are severely limited by capital and coordination — not ideas. Connectomics is a clear case. He argues that mapping the brain's full wiring diagram is the approach most poised-to-scale and still extremely neglected. Costs for a molecularly annotated mouse connectome have come down orders of magnitude, from an estimated $10B to $100M–200M, Adam suggests, with a human connectome perhaps costing around $1B–2B. The cost curve of connectomes is similar to transistors and gene sequencing: once it is low enough, we get extraordinary outcomes for humanity. Near-term applications could pay for it: new drug targets for brain disease, insights for AI development, emulations, and even ā€œcontrol knobsā€ for mood and focus we haven’t identified yet. In this episode, we go deep on many topics in neurotech and beyond: what the brain can do that computers still can't; what neuroscience could teach AI; how you'd actually map a whole mammal brain; how far today's fly-brain simulations really get toward an upload; what it would take to move mind uploading beyond the fringe or science; where brain-computer interfaces go next; nanotech, reversible cryonics, AI doing its own ML research, and even predictive, agent-based economics. I'm very excited to have Adam on the podcast. Hope you enjoy! Other links to this episode and references below.
