Sweden is investing more than $110 million to bring printed textbooks back into classrooms.
After years of pushing digital learning, the Swedish government is reducing screen use in schools and renewing its focus on physical books. Over the past decade, many schools replaced textbooks with laptops and tablets, moving lessons, homework, grading, and parent communication almost entirely online.
During this period, student performance declined. Results from international assessments such as the OECD’s Programme for International Student Assessment showed drops in reading, math, and science, prompting officials to reconsider the role of screens in learning.
Research indicates that reading on digital displays can demand more mental effort than reading on paper, especially for younger students. Screens also introduce more distractions, and studies have linked heavy digital use to reduced comprehension and memory retention.
In response, Sweden allocated €60 million in 2023 to restore printed textbooks, with another €44 million planned through 2025. The aim is to ensure every student has a physical textbook for each subject.
Officials stress that technology isn’t being removed from schools, but repositioned as a support tool rather than the default. Printed books are now prioritized for core learning, particularly reading.
While Sweden remains highly tech-advanced, this policy shift reflects a growing global debate: whether more technology automatically leads to better education.

This Syrian old man hid his private library in his home in the city of Damascus since the end of 2011 before escaping to Kuwait out of fear of the Assad regime, where the mere presence of a banned book could lead you to Assad's gulag and death under torture.
Today, the uncle returned to his library and completely removed the wall behind which he had hidden it, revealing valuable books that the Assad regime prohibited possessing and circulating.

The Vatican has officially declared environmental destruction a ”sin against creation and the Creator” in a major new doctrinal text.
The 29,000-word document, titled Caring for Our Common Home, elevates ecological concern from a merely political or scientific issue into a direct matter of personal faith.
Authorized under Pope Leo XIV, the text declares that destroying natural habitats, polluting, and exploiting resources are not just civic failures, but a 'sin against creation and against the Creator' that directly violates God's plan.
This shift from Pope Francis' earlier concept of 'ecological sin' to a more explicit 'sin against the Creator' is designed to reshape how believers view their daily environmental impact. The Vatican emphasizes that failing to safeguard the planet severely harms the poorest populations and future generations, distorting the core relationships that define humanity. By placing ecological action squarely in the realm of moral responsibility, the Church is challenging millions of people to treat environmental care as a fundamental requirement of their faith.

Children who take music lessons develop a larger corpus callosum, the bridge between the two halves of the brain, and the change is permanent. A 2005 review in the Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences found that early music training produces structural brain changes that persist into adulthood, even if the person stops playing.
The review was led by Gottfried Schlaug at Harvard Medical School, one of the leading researchers on music and the brain. He found that children who started instrumental training before age seven had a significantly larger anterior corpus callosum than non-musicians, and the size difference was still visible in adults who had not touched an instrument in years.
The corpus callosum carries signals between the left and right hemispheres. A larger one means faster, richer communication between the two sides, and the effect shows up in tasks that have nothing to do with music: spatial reasoning, verbal memory, and the ability to process multiple streams of information at once. The music built the highway, and the brain uses it for everything.
Schlaug also found that musicians had larger cerebellums, the region involved in timing and motor coordination, and more grey matter in the areas that process sound. The brain had physically reorganised itself around the demands of the instrument, and the reorganisation was visible on a scan.
The age window matters. Children who started before seven showed the largest changes. Children who started after ten showed smaller ones. Adults who took up an instrument for the first time showed the least structural change, though they still showed some. The brain is most willing to be rebuilt by music during the years when most parents are debating whether to sign their child up for lessons. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/1659…

Time to say goodbye:
This is a Cerulean paradise flycatcher, one of the rarest birds in the world.
For more than a century it was believed to be extinct—known only from a single specimen collected in 1873—until one was found in the last fragments of its ruined forest in the 1990s.
The few found since live only on the island of Sangihe, Indonesia, where the Baru Gold Corp has finally obtained permission to mine the island.
On September 8, 2026, the CEO, Terry Filbert, issued this statement: "Baru’s team of mining and finance professionals boasts extensive experience in starting and operating gold and coal assets. Baru is positioned to become Indonesia’s next gold producer."
The locals have fought this for years, fearing for their settlements and water supplies, but they and this beautiful and unique little bird don't matter to the Indonesian government as it continues its large-scale environmental destruction.
