We remain convinced that getting more young people INTO the money economy is central to sustainable poverty eradication, but our transformation agenda must begin with empowering young people to create wealth, for themselves - first, their households and communities.
At the invitation of the @MakGuild Speaker, Rt. Hon. @TrevisMuhwezi, I joined a panel of young leaders at the University Leaders Convention held today at @Parliament_Ug to discuss Uganda’s economy and the role of young people, particularly university students, in shaping its future.

A pleasure, @SamBegira. The youths can only be happy when everything is well.

I was in Court today for my cases and I witnessed an interesting episode before my cases were called. A young lawyer was sent to court by her principal for a matter that was slated for trial. The lawyer on the other side is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria with over 50years of experience. When the matter was called, the young lawyer stood up to inform the court that her principal was in his way to court to handle the matter as she was not briefed to proceed with the trial. Immediately, the court told her to start looking at the file as the matter must proceed. The court stood the matter down for like 2hours. When it was recalled again, the young lawyer’s principal was not still in court and the SAN was prepared to proceed. The SAN put his witness in the box and tendered all the documents. When it was now the turn of the young lawyer to cross examine the witness, she stood up with confidence and said: my Lord, we will like to take a short adjournment to enable us cross-examine the witness. In the interest of justice, I plead to the court to allow us come back. Clearly showing hesitation to adjourn the matter, the court called upon the SAN to respond to the young lady’s application for adjournment. Some of us in court were already thinking the SAN would insist the young lawyer must proceed, so as to gain an unfair advantage in the case, as cross examination is a crucial part of the case. The learned SAN stood up and said: my Lord, I was in this lady’s position 51years ago. My principal gave me a file for a case for trial and when the matter was called upon, clearly I wasn’t ready to go on, I stood up to ask for an adjournment. Thanks to the senior counsel on the other side, who extended grace to me to concede to an adjournment. So it is my turn to extend the same grace to another younger lawyer, and I hope in the future, when she also finds herself in similar situation, she will extend the same grace to the junior lawyer. So my Lord, I will not be objecting the her application for adjournment. Everybody in court including the young lawyer immediately wore a wide smile on their faces. It was a sigh of relief for the young lawyer. Then the judge said to the young lawyer: thank your luck that the SAN extended grace to you, and now I don’t have any option but to grant your request for an adjournment. The judge added however that: the tenacity of the lady not to go on was impressive. But admonished her to always be familiar with the facts of the case and be ready to proceed regardless of whether the principal was coming to court or not.

UGANDA MAY BE AUTOMATING THE VERY JOBS THAT TRAIN TOMORROW’S SENIOR LAWYERS. THEREFORE WHO TAKES THE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUNG LAWYERS' WELFARE, PROFFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND THE FUTURE OF THE LEGAL PROFFESSION IN UGANDA:- Traditionally, today's Senior Lawyers gained experience by filing court papers, applying for workpermits, conducting land and company searches, filing URSB Returns, Drafting Pleadings and handling routine client matters. These were not merely errands; they were the training ground for professional competence. The Young advocates earned some money and gained valuable experience out of this routine work. Currently, ECCMIS is digitising court processes from filing of Court Papers to service of process, while AI can assist with legal research, document review and drafting. Online registries are also changing how land and company searches and statutory returns are handled. Senior Lawyers are able to handle these tasks without the use of Young Lawyers. As these tasks change, what happens to young lawyers’ employment, income and opportunities to learn the profession? This is not just a technology question. It is a question of young lawyers’ welfare. Proffessional development and the future of the Bar. My proposals: 1. LDC @LDC_Uganda : Post Graduate Legal Education should incorporate AI, digital litigation and make practical legal-tech training compulsory. 2. Uganda Law Society @ug_lawsociety : There's need to Survey Young Lawyers’ Employment, pay, working conditions and career prospects annually. 3. Law firms: There is need to establish paid graduate programmes, structured mentorship and supervised practical training. 4. Law Council: Reform pupillage to guarantee meaningful exposure to AI, technology, advocacy, drafting, negotiation and client advisory. 5. Government & Private sector: There is need to create paid internships and entry-level roles in legal tech, compliance and data protection. 6. Young lawyers: There is need to master AI and digital tools while strengthening legal judgment, advocacy and client management. We must not preserve obsolete jobs merely to create employment BUT we must create new pathways for young lawyers to learn, earn and progress. Technological progress should not leave a generation of qualified lawyers without decent work or a viable future in the profession.

How German national lost sh5b to gold mafia After losing over $1.5m (about sh5.7b) to gold scammers who had been introduced to him by Peter Musoke, a senior lawyer and former partner at Shonubi, Musoke & Company Advocates, a German national, Christian Arndt, was allegedly threatened with death and ordered never to come back to Uganda. When he left the country, he was also subjected to a series of arrests by his partners back in Dubai. On September 18, 2026, Arndt landed at Entebbe International Airport, having almost spent two years out of the country. DETAILS 👉👉newvision.co.ug/category/new… #VisionUpdates
