We're recording round two of this on Monday! While the calendar says it's only been a year, it feels more like twenty since we've entered the age of agents.

Long hike in LA hills with @hubermanlab, one of my favorite humans (& best friends) on Earth. I enjoy hikes where you can be in nature and still, at some high-elevation points, see the city in the distance below. In those moments, it all seems so surreal. How did we clever humans build all of that? We went from hunter-gatherers to a civilization that can space travel and has a chance to colonize other planets and reach out toward the stars 🤯

I watched the full 6-hour interview with @dhh by @lexfridman. Here's my review. Six hours flew by. This is what happens when you listen to a truly interesting person with an incredible life journey. DHH praises Ruby (a dynamically typed OOP language) while I was enjoying Haskell and OCaml for the last 10 years (statically typed FP languages). What struck me as a surprise is that he listed all the exact same reasons for liking Ruby as I would list for liking FP. It's impressive how people's brains can be wired differently, and it can be so hard to understand them. Yet, it's refreshing to hear a take where it's fine to use different languages. What matters is passion for programming. I also absolutely agree with the takes on open-source. I don't think the problem is funding. The problem is that people spend their free time solving real problems, giving their solutions away for free and expect a reward. The true reward you can get from OSS is not monetary, it's spiritual. That's why I never recommend doing OSS to fix your financial problems. At least, be smart about it. DHH's enthusiasm and passion are contagious. I want to try Ruby and Rails. I want to try Omarchy. I want to try Hey. The vision and principles behind a person sell the product better than the tech. It doesn't matter what's used to write it. What matters is that I can trust the person or company to drive the product in the direction I can follow. I have lots of thoughts, but I won't spoil much. I definitely recommend every SWE to watch this legendary interview.

Imagine if every pattern shaped by nature – like a protein’s fold or cosmic phenomena – is inherently learnable by AI. @DemisHassabis shares with @lexfridman that if AI can learn these natural patterns, we could open doors to new eras of scientific discovery.
